Side note, they left the reel change cue markers on which is just about the most nostalgic thing I can see on film. I would count how many there were when I’d go see a movie.

I’m watching the #4K80 fan film restoration of #StarWars #TheEmpireStrikesBack and foot the first time I noticed the Rebel T-47 Airspeeders on Hoth sometimes are transparent due to the difficulties of matting against a white background. I’m sure it was fixed for the special edition so you won’t see it on Disney Plus.

In the office today. Kind of a slow day after a busy week. I put #4K80 on my work laptop so I could listen to director’s commentary while working. Like many old movies, they don’t talk nearly enough. Modern movies they often talk through the whole film. I need more taking.
The commentary track is from the 1993 laserdisc. #EmpireStrikesBack

Downloaded #4K80 yesterday and then gave it a watch. #EmpireStrikesBack is consistently more grainy than the other two films. I wonder why. Does anyone know? #StarWars

@skab there’s something about the heavy grain and palette in the first act of #4k80. Particularly in the Hoth base, it feels like a gritty 70s spy thriller, and that really fits the story. It’s so much more engaging than the ultra-clean versions Disney/Lucas put out in later years.
The technical production stuff like this sits alongside the other aspects of a movie like the acting and direction. Modernise one and it can clash with the other

I've been watching the #4k77 restoration of #StarWars this afternoon and it looks a *lot* better than I expected it to.
I wasn’t exactly expecting it to look *bad*, but given George's desire to upgrade it so much over the years I was expecting pretty shonky FX in places. Turns out I wasn't remembering it with rose-tinted glasses: it really is as good as when I first saw it 40+ years ago.
I think I prefer it to Harmy’s #Despecialized Edition, tbh
Now, let's see how #4k80 looks and sounds!

Apparently Project #4k80 finally completed and released their version of The Empire Strikes Back. If you want the best looking version, Harmy’s Despecialized Editions are still the way to go, but if you want to see the original trilogy as it was projected back in the day, warts and all, this is what you need 😎
