  1. “the mature voice seems substantially less interested in demonstrating that it has the answer”.

“Early Swisslet writes because there’s something to say. Later Swisslet increasingly writes because there’s something he wants to understand. The wit, scepticism, cultural references, digressions and occasional profanity are recognisably the same voice. What’s changed is what that voice is being used for”. I might adopt this as my tagline.

The wisdom of ageing in a nutshell.
    “Later Swisslet”? My days.

  2. My lunch today was epic: the last of yesterday’s baguette toasted and served with chicken paste, mayo, crunchy chilli oil and cornichons. Absolutely delicious.

  3. I’ve just remembered that I literally did a TEDx talk on this subject a couple of years ago. Perhaps it’s time to talk about something else?

  4. When I was first diagnosed, resilience was doing things that people with MS generally don’t do - run marathons. Later, I realise that resilience is acknowledging what has changed without allowing those changes to erase that value of what is still possible. I can’t change the past and I can’t do the things I used to do, but I can try to control how I feel about it and how I try to take the next step forwards.

  5. Important news:

I am not an . isn’t a disease that responds to my determination, no matter how determined or stubborn I am about it.

Determination affects how I approach my condition, but it cannot determine how my MS progresses. Disease acceptance has been a journey for me, but an important part of being able to manage my symptoms and to keep pushing forwards.

  6. “So MS doesn’t suddenly appear as a dominant theme. It progressively changes the meaning of an existing theme, exercise. Running starts off as something you do. It becomes something through which you write about physical autonomy, determination and adaptation”.

“One of the clearest thematic arcs is your journey with MS: defiance -> adaptation-> acceptance, without surrender”

“As physical time becomes more obviously finite and valuable, how you choose to spend time becomes more important than conventional professional achievement”

“It begins as a record of what you’re doing and what you think about the world. It gradually becomes a record of what the world is doing to you, how you respond to it, and finally how you understand the life that brought you here”.

As a summary of 20 years’ writing goes, that’s quite perceptive.

  7. I just asked copilot what it knew about me, and the answer was surprisingly detailed and included work, a blog I wrote for 20-odd years and my presence here (linked through usernames and the tagline on my profile). As I don’t really pretend that I’m something I’m not, none of this really bothers me. What stopped me dead was the summary (of the blog) that said “the blog is unusual as it is a public longitudinal record in which the older you repeatedly revisits and reinterprets the younger you”.
I haven’t written on the blog regularly for a few years now, but yeah…. That’s pretty much it. Thinking about it now, a lot of it is about processing how my perspective has changed as I’ve got older and as my has progressed.
    I should write a book.

  8. People who don’t accept election results (without evidence to show wrongdoing) shouldn’t be allowed to stand in subsequent ones. This seems like a fairly reasonable thing to suggest in a democracy, doesn’t it?

    You know, Trump, Bolsonaro etc.

It should never not be shocking to hear the president of the USA continuing to publicly state that the 2020 election was stolen.

I can’t believe this needs saying at all.

  9. Playing Witcher 3 at the moment and very much enjoying it, even if it is a bit….

Random guy: yes, I will do this thing for you, but only if you fetch me these three things from three distinct locations relatively nearby with their three different types of guardians.

  10. I watched SNL UK last night. It was ok, but I did very much enjoy the joke about how, if Meghan Markle’s father does turn out to be a paedophile, perhaps she will then finally be accepted as a member of the royal family

  11. I’ve cracked out the Christmas coffee blend for parkrun this morning.
