  1. Peak Cavern in Derbyshire - otherwise known as 'the Devil's Arse' - has the largest cave entrance in Britain. It leads to the biggest cave system in the Peak District, which boasts infernally named features such as Pluto's Dining Room, the Devil's Staircase, and the Inner Styx. Until 1915, the cave was inhabited by some of Britain's last troglodytes - ropemakers who'd built their cottages within the entrance. Deeper parts of the network served as meeting points for gypsies and bandits. Some claim the secretive dialect known as 'Thieves' Cant' was created there. Legend says the name was changed from the Devil's Arse to Peak Cavern to avoid offending Queen Victoria when she visited the site. The cavern's more vulgar name is thought to come from the cave's gaping entrance and the flatulent-like noises created when flood water is draining away.
