A study has been looking into why man stopped using large stone tools. Such tools disappeared from the fossil record about 200,000 years ago. It found that it coincided with decrease in larger animals and so lighter tools were developed instead as the others were no longer required. It was thought that the change was due to man becoming smarter, but it was much simpler and demand driven. https://phys.org/news/2026-04-giants-heavy-handaxes-early-humans.html -

Recently in northern Poland 4500 year old vessels have been found. Within them were traces of fermented alcoholic drinks. The remains of yeast and products of bacteria indicate that fermentation had taken place. It is thought that the grain used to produce the drinks had been specifically imported for the use in brewing. Fruit may have been added to provide extra flavour. Some vessels are thought to have contained Nordic grog. https://archaeology.org/news/2026/05/19/4500-year-old-alcoholic-beverages-identified-in-poland/ -

At an archeological dig of a hospital 38 skeletons have been found. They date back to the 12th century and were an unexpected find. It is likely that there was a church on the site that that these people were buried in the graveyard. This means that further discoveries could be made. Several Bronze Age flints were also found meaning that the area has been in human use since prehistoric times. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c62e8gyz9ndo -

Fog frightened our ancestors as they didn't know what could be lurking in the depths of it. But now scientists have found that fog is alive- alive with bacteria. Bacteria that are growing. However they help to break down pollutants in the air. A study found that they swiftly broke down formaldehyde probably for self preservation, but good news for us too. https://www.sciencealert.com/fog-is-teeming-with-life-and-it-may-be-doing-us-a-surprising-favor -

Archaeologists have recovered a rare medieval notebook from a latrine in Germany. The book is about 750 years old and made of wooden tablets coated in wax with a leather binding. Eight of the ten pages have been written on in Latin. Designed to hold temporary thoughts or notes the wax could be smoothed away ready for another day. However some of the earlier thoughts can be seen. The latrine contained other artefacts too. https://www.medievalists.net/2026/05/medieval-notebook-discovered-in-german-latrine/ -

Calendars can have a quote of the day. Now you can read some from the Medieval Era. These include 'The nourishment of the body is food, whilst the nourishment of the soul is feeding others.' Or Chaucer's comment 'What is better than wisdom? Woman. What is better than a good woman? Nothing' or 'Persons would lead a most happy life if from their vocabulary they removed two words: mine and yours'. https://www.medievalists.net/2026/05/25-great-quotes-from-the-middle-ages/ -

Scientists are stating that we may have discovered dark matter by accident in 2019. They have been examining data from gravitational waves. Using a model that dark matter could be detected via gravitational waves from two black holes colliding; two English scientists have been using that model to other gravitational wave experiments. One event in 2019 shows promise, but the scientists are cautious abut drawing firm conclusions. https://www.sciencealert.com/dark-matter-may-have-been-detected-by-accident-scientists-reveal -

A study is suggesting that the Romans did not develop the sophisticated plaster- making technique using dolomite. It was first referred to in writing by the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius. However dolomite plaster has been found in a Neolithic settlement in the Judean Hills. That is some 8,000 years earlier- so perhaps it is an example of a lost technology and the Romans rediscovered it. https://www.sciencealert.com/ancient-roman-technique-discovered-8000-years-earlier-study-says -

Does this look like a face? Archaeologists have found a rock at a dig in Alderney. It is thought that the stone was a boundary marker. The stone relates to the Middle Bronze Age and it s thought that from certain angles it looks like a face has been carved into it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckgpderp88yo -

A little time ago came the news that humans and dogs have bonded for many more thousands of years than thought. Now its been discovered the same of true of horses. It was thought that horses were domesticated 4,000 years ago, but this has now been pushed back by 1000 years. Using DNA and archaeology they found that taming began as early as 3000 BCE if not earlier. But this process was a stop-start process. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/horse-domestication-taming-riding-history-b2976545.html -

A subatomic particle called the neutrino has been the focus of scientists for the last few decades. These particles are 'ghost-like' in that whilst 100 trillion of them pass through our bodies every second, they do not interact with us. Smaller than an atom, they may hold the key to the origin of matter. Part of their elusiveness is that they rarely interact with other particles, even photons.https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-science/ghost-particle -

An image taken by NASA's TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) spacecraft shows 6,000 planets beyond our solar system. TESS launched in 2018 has been scanning looking for exoplanets. Whilst known that other planets must be orbiting suns, exoplanets were only confirmed at the end of the 1990s. Now NASA has confirmed that there are over 6,000 and that every star in the sky has at least one planet orbiting it. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news/tess-all-sky-mosaic-6000-exoplanets -

A purple pigment was worth more than gold in the Roman world. Roman emperors threatened death if anyone else used it, the Catholic church used it for religious clothing and texts. Now it has been found in the coffins of two babies buried in York, England. 1700 years ago liquid gypsum as per burial customs was used to seal the coffins, but also preserved Tyrian purple dye; made from thousands of murex snail shells. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/in-the-ancient-world-this-pigment-was-worth-more-than-gold-archaeologists-discovered-it-buried-with-babies-in-roman-coffins-180988678/ -

A study has found that an advanced AI model has outperformed doctors in diagnosing patients and recommending the next steps for treatment. This was even in the chaotic, messy world of an emergency room. Those who were examining in the results of diagnoses were unaware of whether a human or AI had completed the task. The AI scored an average of 89 out of 100, though figures vary according to the point of the hospital journey. https://studyfinds.com/ai-outperforms-doctors-diagnosing-patients-harvard-stanford-study/ -

May is also the month we get to see two full moons in the month as a full moon appears every 29.5 days. See link for times of when the moon will rise for North America, Uk and Ireland, Europe and Asia. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news/flower-moon-2026 -

A historian is challenging the theory that the Anglo-saxons marched from Stamford Bridge to fight in the Battle of Hastings. He has been re-examining Anglo-Saxon Chronicles as well as 11th century sources. He states that the idea of marching from the north to meet William was a Victorian idea. Instead he says that Harold used England's naval assets to make the journey south. It comes as the Bayeux Tapestry is about to go on display in the UK.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce3gdxgw44eo -

Today should see 755,000 gallons of super-cold propellants loaded into Artemis II. This is part of a simulated countdown and is a step closer to sending 4 astronauts on a 10 day voyage to the far side of the moon and back to earth. If the test goes well it hints at the chance of the launch taking place later this month. https://arstechnica.com/space/2026/02/nasa-gears-up-for-one-more-key-test-before-launching-artemis-ii-to-the-moon/
