The developments at #NWO and #ZonMw are fully aligned with the direction in which we are moving at @cwts.
In our Information & Openness focal area we are putting a lot of effort into studying and promoting openness of research information https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/the-focal-areas-of-cwts.
We are for instance working on setting up a new version of the #LeidenRanking based on open data from @OpenAlex https://www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-europe-universities-2023-9-leiden-rankings-to-add-open-source-version-in-2024/.
We hope many others will join the movement toward open research information!

In recent years open access figures for #NWO and #ZonMw were compiled by my center @cwts based on proprietary data from #WebOfScience. CWTS, NWO and ZonMw felt increasingly uneasy about use of closed data for monitoring open science. Great to see that NWO and ZonMw have now switched to open data. Open data enables them to compile open access analytics themselves, without being dependent on external providers. This shows the power of open data in democratizing the research analytics landscape!

Important step by #NWO and #ZonMw: New open access figures are based on open data from @crossref and other sources.
@HLdeJonge: "we'd like to raise awareness of importance of cooperation between funders, institutions, libraries, publishers and service providers such as Crossref to improve and enrich metadata of publications ... we are now taking this first step. We hope to inspire others to follow this example and collectively strive for improved quality and completeness of open metadata"

This morning I gave a brief talk about preprint peer review at the #PreprintReview23 workshop organized by #EuropePMC and @ASAPbio.
I made the observation that everyone seems unhappy and frustrated in the traditional peer review system. Change in peer review is long overdue!

Where are the carrots? A proposal to start crediting the peer reviewers for their contribution to science https://doi.org/10.31219/osf.io/7c5xr
In this paper Aron Laxdal and Tommy Haugen argue that peer review is in crisis and that we need better ways to credit and incentivize reviewers. They see open peer review as part of the solution.
I just reviewed the paper by Laxdal and Haugen, and in line with their argument I published my review: https://ludowaltman.pubpub.org/pub/review-crediting-reviewers/release/1.

Unreviewed science in the news: The evolution of preprint media coverage from 2014-2021 https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.07.10.548392
This preprint by Alice Fleerackers, Kenneth Shores, Natascha Chtena and @juancommander shows how the COVID-19 pandemic led to a major increase in media coverage of preprints.
I just published a review of this preprint https://doi.org/10.21428/7ccec04a.e1d7801e.
Another review can be found at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8232591.

Registration for the launch symposium of the Dutch Reproducibility Network #NLRN on October 27 is now open! https://reproducibilitynetwork.nl/activities/
The symposium aims to bring together stakeholders from different parts of the research ecosystem — including peer-led grassroots initiatives, research institutions, research support services, and external stakeholders — to build connections, identify needs and resources, showcase existing efforts, and start shaping the reproducibility agenda.

In June this year the team of @opencitations published a highly informative paper about OpenCitations Meta, a new database created by the OpenCitations team that provides access to open metadata for many millions of scientific outputs https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.16191v1.
I just published a short review of this paper https://ludowaltman.pubpub.org/pub/review-opencitations-meta/release/1. I very much enjoyed reading the paper, but also have some suggestions for improvements.
-
I also made suggestions for concrete actions that I believe universities should take:
1. Join @INORMS_REG #MoreThanOurRank initiative https://inorms.net/more-than-our-rank/. @lizziegadd
2. Join @coarassessment and implement commitment 4 (avoid use of rankings in research assessment) https://coara.eu/agreement/the-commitments/.
3. Make data provided to university rankings openly available.
4. Request publishers to make all metadata of publications openly available through @crossref. @MsPhelps

Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking at French Ranking Day organized by #Clarivate and Université PSL.
I spoke about growing global dissatisfaction with major university rankings, including commitment made recently by the Dutch universities to work on culture change in use of rankings https://www.universiteitenvannederland.nl/en_GB/nieuws-detail/nieuwsbericht/915-p-dutch-universities-to-take-different-approach-to-rankings-p.html. #UNL
I also presented ongoing work to create fully open edition of @cwts #LeidenRanking https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/the-cwts-leiden-ranking-2023. @neesjanvaneck @OpenAlex #COKI

Key insights from our work:
(1) Preprinting needs to be made easier. This can be realized by integrating preprinting in journal submission workflows and other types of infrastructure development (e.g. #COARNotify).
(2) Preprinting needs to be made more rewarding. Hopefully @coarassessment can work on this.
(3) Quality assurance mechanisms for preprints need further development. This shows importance of initiatives around preprint review https://doi.org/10.31219/osf.io/cht8p. @PeerCommunityIn @ReviewCommons

The teams of @aimos and @RoRInstitute are working hard to set up the MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review) platform for publication and peer review of research in the field of metaresearch, or research on research.
We just published a short piece in #EASST Review to introduce our plans for MetaROR to the science and technology studies (STS) community https://www.easst.net/article/metaror-a-new-form-of-scholarly-publishing-and-peer-review-for-sts/.

Opening Knowledge: Retaining Rights and Open Licensing in Europe https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8084051
#SPARCEurope recommends that "research and higher education institutions should augment their existing policies with elements calling for rights retention to support immediate Open Access to all types of research scholarly outputs".
49 European research institutions participating in a survey reported to have a rights retention policy in place or in development.

Registration for the @sti2023 conference is open https://www.sti2023.org/registration/.
The conference is hybrid and we charge different fees for on-site and online participants.
I'm especially happy that we're able to offer a much reduced fee for online participants from lower income countries, defined as group A and B countries according to the #Research4Life classification https://www.research4life.org/access/eligibility/.
We hope this will contribute to a conference that is more globally inclusive.
