Update. "The University of Groningen (UG) and the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) will cancel their licence for the #WebOfScience database with effect from 1 January 2027."
-
And now #Clarivate #WebOfScience says:
"Roaming Access Expiration Notice
Your roaming access to the Web of Science has expired. You are in a free session of the Web of Science and the functionality may be limited. To gain full access to the Web of Science you will need to renew your roaming access by signing in to Web of Science at your institution."They really like to snoop don't they?

#Clarivate wants me to review 7 publications added to my #WebOfScience profile, so tried to log in. Figured I'd login via my #OrcidID, but Clarivate want permissions to:
* Add/update your research activities (works, affiliations, etc.)
* Add/update information about you (country, keywords, etc.)
* Read your information with visibility set to Trusted partiesNone of those are acceptable to me, denied. Signed in with Google - all they get that way is read access to my name, profile picture and email address.

A 2020 paper on using jade amulets to cure COVID has had quite some fallout.
Three years on, the first author sued his institution, Pittsburgh, because he said their response was discriminatory: https://retractionwatch.com/2023/08/11/author-of-paper-on-covid-19-and-jade-amulets-sues-employer-for-mental-anguish-discrimination/. He left the same year and has since founded his own institute for "paradigm shifts".
Five years on, this case and other problems led Clarivate to delist the journal, Elsevier's Science of the Total Environment, from the Web of Science. https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2025-11-28/the-fall-of-a-prolific-science-journal-exposes-the-billion-dollar-profits-of-scientific-publishing.html

Update. The French 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 (#CNRS) is canceling the #WebOfScience and encouraging its affiliates to use #OpenAlex. It canceled #Scopus last year.

I understand the concern around #Clarivate #Proquest buying #ERIC database. They might begin to charge for access (However, I have some doubts that they'll do that).
Nevertheless, were there alternatives? Yes, the government should have never defund it, but they did.
And, unless there were any better alternatives of acquisition that I'm unaware of, the buying by Clarivate at least give some expectative that the resource could survive

Damian Pattinson of @eLife (and my former boss at PLOS ONE) at The Royal Society's Future of Scientific Publishing conference describes the devastating effect on their submissions of Clarivate removing their Impact Factor due to their change in peer review model, then asks why other journals, including Science, don't renounce their own IFs.

Update. First see the #SCONUL objections to the #Clarivate model, which I inadvertently failed to put in this thread.
https://fediscience.org/@petersuber/114087881564045960Second, see the Clarivate response to #library objections.
https://www.researchinformation.info/news/clarivate-issues-letter-to-the-library-community/"We acknowledge that…ownership [is] essential to libraries’ missions, and is the primary way you acquire content. Subscription models are just one component of your collection and access strategies. Our ebook subscriptions are not designed to replace perpetual front-list and textbook purchases and budgets…We remain unequivocally committed to preserving perpetual access to previously purchased Ebook Central titles."
But only to previously purchased titles, and future books purchased through #Rialto. The atrocious model stands for other #books purchased after June 30, 2026.

Kudos to the Society of College, National and University Libraries (#SCONUL) for its open letter opposing the #Clarivate decision to stop letting #libraries buy perpetual access to #books. www.sconul.ac.uk/News/View?g=... #AcademicSky #EduSky #LibrarySky #ScholComm

@ORCID_Org
As your website states:"A key ORCID principle is that you are in control of the data on your ORCID record, including who you share it with. "
But that is not true if deleting my profile in a completely separate company (Clarivate) that I did not originally agree to share my Publons data with ends up deleting my reviews from my orcid record, right?

@elduvelle oh, I just found out that #Publons was bought by #Clarivate grr https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Publons
-
I recently deleted my #Clarivate researcher profile because I don't think I ever agreed to it being created from my #Publons profile in the first place.. And it automatically deleted half of my peer-review record in #Orcid! Without even asking me! Apparently it had writing access to it, but I don't remember agreeing to that either.
Anyone had this problem and managed to recover the deleted records in Orcid? I emailed them but no news so far..

Following up on the #eLife / #Clarivate saga, DORA has posted a statement:
https://sfdora.org/2024/11/25/clarivates-actions-regarding-elife-doras-response/extracts:
"This development reinforces how a commercial entity such as Clarivate, can, through its ownership of scholarly databases and indices, hold the academic community to ransom. Clarivate’s announcement is disappointing as it both punishes innovation in peer review and disregards the important role of authors in deciding how and where their research should be published."
"As funders and institutions increasingly move away from using single metrics to assess research(ers), the role of Journal Impact Factors is becoming increasingly irrelevant."
"We therefore support eLife and encourage it to continue its innovation and encourage other journals to consider doing the same."
Go #eLife, Go AWAY #ImpactFactor!

Web of Science can't handle innovation 🤷♂️ https://rossmounce.co.uk/2024/11/18/web-of-science-cant-handle-innovation/
-
This is how I feel about Web of Science vs. eLife fwiw
It's much bigger than just eLife. Clarivate isn't moving with the times.
Many of the best venues you can publish your research in are now _outside_ of Clarivate's "Master Journal List" 🤷♂️
eLife transitioning into life beyond Clarivate is part of a much wider trend.
#OpenAccess #AcademicPublishing #eLife #Clarivate #WebOfScience

funny to see this over at Clarivate.
Does deleting eLife from the "Master Journal List" really require them to take down the whole thing whilst they do it?
[edit: it's back-up now]

Emperor Clarivatus has decided that Elias eLife must be banished from the kingdom of the Master Journal List.
Elias eLife’s crime? Helping science to be done better, with more efficiency and less waste. 🤷♂️

It's all too clear, isn't it. #WebOfScience would like the status quo to not change at all – they are profiting enormously from it. Whereas scientists would like the status quo to change – our grants are being drained dry from publishing fees, our libraries are also drained dry from subscription fees, and academic administrators spend countless moneys on bibliometrics supplied by Clarivate to "evaluate" academics for their "throughput" – in quotes because using these words for what they actually do (counting papers and citations) is a perversion.
By the way #Clarivate owns #EndNote, #Publons and #ScholarOne – we really ought to not use *any* of these. It's in our power.

I received an email from #Clarivate that a reviewer of an article I handled would like feedback on their #PeerReview.
I am usually inclined to support development, but I cannot find out how the data I provide are going to be used.
I am asked for quantitative ratings (clarity, helpfulness etc) which won't be shared with the reviewer. And I can provide written comments, which will be shared.
Anyone experience to share?

Has Clarivate been hacked? 👀 [serious question fwiw]
"In March 2024 the journal’s Scholar One site was affected. The “Journal Home” link mysteriously changed to the fraudulent site – Scholar One were unable to tell us who made/requested the change, or how they did it?"
If your journal uses Scholar One (which is an expensive error in itself), you might want to do some urgent security checks!

https://clarivate.com/blog/2024-journal-citation-reports-changes-in-journal-impact-factor-category-rankings-to-enhance-transparency-and-inclusivityIt's now cultivating the false & invidious impression that journals w/o JIFs are somehow untrustworthy or fraudulent.
"We have evolved the JIF from an indicator of scholarly impact (the numerical value of the JIF)…to an indicator of both…impact & trustworthiness (having a JIF – regardless of the number)."
