  1. Note, too: there is an English Settlement preview during the performance, too: Moulding's Ball & Chain.

That makes some sense, given how much it sounds like it would have fit on Black Sea...

  2. XTC - Live Boots - Emerald City, Cherry Hill, New Jersey 17th Apr 1981

This is the peak of XTC's time touring, between the release of Black Sea and English Settlement, and before they stopped touring completely a year or so later (just before they were coming to Brown, damn it).

Anyway, despite the "bootleg" quality of the sound, they're killing it, playing a mix of tracks from their first four (and nothing from the Lure of Salvage, fortunately).

  3. Lucinda Williams - World's Gone Wrong

There's a danger to these days
You can feel it in the air
    Evil has come to play
    You can feel it everywhere
There's a fear in these days
    Shadows in the eyes
When you know what they say
It's the place of truth and lies
There's a danger to these days

  8. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden

There's not a lot to say about this masterpiece without sounding like a douche, so instead here's an article about it by the Music Aficionado:

    musicaficionado.blog/2018/09/1

New half-speed master, and good pressing. Given the dynamics involved, the pressing *matters*.

One video of an edited track, to give an idea:

  13. The Bad Plus (s/t 2)

Another Bad Plus reboot, this time replacing piano completely with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor).

Destined to be the last incarnation of the Bad Plus, if their announcement holds, with a goodbye tour going on this year.

This is recognizably Bad Plus music, while stretching in new directions. The LP itself is a little...murky sounding, unfortunately.

  18. Thelonious Monk - Underground

It's weird to think this 1968 release (the cover, depicting Monk as a french resistance fighter, gun and all, won a Grammy) is Monk's next-to-last LP, and the last with his final quartet.

Monk is the 2nd most recorded jazz composer (after Ellington), never popular in his time, and considered difficult.

Monk's joined by Charlie Rouse (tenor), Larry Gales (bass), and Ben Riley (drums). John Hendricks (v) on the last track.

  23. Flea - Honora

When you think "Flea Jazz Trumpet" album, my guess is you're thinking "man, this is going to be a pile of overblown, unlistenable crap".

Or, at least, I did. But then I looked at who's collaborating, and, well...gave it a shot.

A little scared right off with this kind of silliest, most "Whitey on the Moon" track, but there's no question he does a damn good job (even if he can't quite manage Morning Cry's synched fast runs).

    Brave move; kudos.

  24. The New Pornographers - Electric Version

As was obvious from the start, you just can't go wrong with any New Pornographers album, as long as you like smart Power Pop.

In these early days, Dan Bejar was kind of a group member, although here a "secret" member...despite contributing four songs.

He's a good foil for Carl Newman, who tends to write densely literate songs, whereas Bejar kind of wild-mans it. In a good way.

  29. Veruca Salt - Blow It Our Your Ass It's Veruca Salt

Here's where Veruca Salt, after working with Brad Wood on American Thighs, got together with Steve Albini and put out an EP indicating their new, heavier direction.

It's basically two-good and two-fine tracks, a little derivative of their first album, but it was nice to get a follow-up at the time!
