  1. The Orkney Vole was thought to have been brought to Orkney as pets, on seaweed rafts, or in fodder taken up north by neolithic farmers. This Belgian species, the European Vole migrated to Orkney without landing on mainland Britain. Now though bones of the species have been found in a cave in South West England.

    A study has been looking into why man stopped using large stone tools. Such tools disappeared from the fossil record about 200,000 years ago. It found that it coincided with decrease in larger animals and so lighter tools were developed instead as the others were no longer required.     Recently in northern Poland 4500 year old vessels have been found. Within them were traces of fermented alcoholic drinks. The remains of yeast and products of bacteria indicate that fermentation had taken place. It is thought that the grain used to produce the drinks had been specifically imported for the use in brewing. Fruit may have been added to provide extra flavour.     At an archeological dig of a hospital 38 skeletons have been found. They date back to the 12th century and were an unexpected find. It is likely that there was a church on the site that that these people were buried in the graveyard. This means that further discoveries could be made.
