Having seen some encouraging data on the satellites last night, I got organised and headed down to the fishing pier. And waited. And waited. And waited.
To the north there were clouds coming in, and to the south the moon was painting the night sky blue. It felt like a race between the incoming weather, and the satellite data that promised some activity.
Then it arrived. Just a few ribbons at first in the south, then a beautiful band that started in the East and reached right across the horizon to the west. I had my 11mm with me, so managed to grab a slice of the moment before the clouds moved in proper and shut down the fun.

Got a wonderful opportunity to shoot with the 11mm Fisheye last night. Still not sure this is the lens for me, but definitely can see the value of such a wide perspective on such a big night of auroras.

This lens by the way is an 11mm Fisheye F2.8 by TT Artisan. It's noticeably darker than their 14mm F2.8, and even though it's very very small it's noticeably heavier too. These are very affordable lenses and offer a decent ratio of fun:spend :)

@ewen I feel that there's a great deal of room for improvement in our communication with local public and governmental bodies that aren't directly funding. e.g. US Congress (ok, let's assume a functional govt). The folks who explain the importance of fundamental research without an obvious/immediately marketable product often do so poorly. The folks who lobby for big projects routinely over promise. For example, the human genome project push led statements that it'd quickly result in cures for all sorts of diseases (the time scale being the issue here). Now some of this is a reflection of the media, but a major problem is what scientists said, both to the govt, then to each other.
And it's true that graduate programs have not formally included communication as a formal training goal. Perhaps we can get some PhDs with good training/ability in communication into alternative media outlets and into elected positions to help remedy this.

@ewen I'm frustrated too that the onus is always on us, the scientists, to communicate better. I think scientists tend to communicate well with other scientists, and some scientists communicate well with the public-at-large. I totally agree that the media is a problem, a huge problem that can't be overstated!). (And not only the news media, but the entertainment media that makes scientists more likely to be driven by hubris that'll lead to some big evil that only a guy with a gun can solve. But I digress) However, the media is also not the only audience.
We can also talk directly to our communities! In general scientists don't do a great job interacting directly with their local communities and explaining what they do so people know a scientist and better understand how it works. e.g. that one never knows from where a breakthrough might come, so "knowledge for knowledge's sake" is an actual investment.

I increasingly get people commenting on my youtube videos with things like "nobody wants to edit photos anymore, just get it right in camera" or something to that effect. I don't believe in shooting JPG to begin with, and fundamentally that's on the basis that RAW files have more creative potential.
This whole idea of being militant against editing photos just seems weird to me. If you don't wanna dig deep into photography then you don't have to, but why leave aggressive comments for people who are exercising a little skill and artistic pursuit?
