  2. RIP Walter Koenig. Here's a beautiful eulogy about him from JMS, creator of Babylon 5.

Walter Koenig's character Bester was amazingly acted and so iconic that "psicop" is still instantly recognizable to most of my friends when used as a "fast but simple Halloween costume".

  6. I continue to be extremely salty about the techbros claiming the word “algorithm” such that it’s come to mean “creepy surveillance-based recommender system” in popular parlance.

That’s partly because this was a programmer’s word long before the post-dot-com techbros were even teething — and partly because Al-Khwarizmi was cool and I will not hear his name besmirched.

  7. I mostly follow @voxel 's blog for, like, low-bit hacking stuff and pixel art, but turns out it's also a pretty darn good source of music recommendations.

zodiacmusicofficial.bandcamp.c is dark drum-and-bass that gives a sort of "Juno Reactor but more evil" vibe.

  8. : "No candidate who failed to win the first round had ever prevailed in the second.…Yet there was one key figure in ’s orbit who remained confident in the possibility of a turnaround: Congressman André . With Lula’s blessing, he immediately set about bringing the campaign into the digital spaces it had so far struggled to penetrate. The Brazilian far right, seemingly convinced they were unbeatable, downplayed Lula’s steady rise in the polls over the last three weeks — until finally, on Sunday, he defied the odds and stormed to victory, winning an astounding 64 million votes.

The outcome was the result of two immediate factors: Lula’s singular leadership, and Janones’s intuitive understanding of today’s online ecosystem. Together, they managed to beat the machine."

  12. RE: fed.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app

The word “algorithm” is derived from the family name of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, a Persian who lived in Baghdad and not only wrote down the instructions for what we now call “long addition” and “long multiplication” etc. — the instructions that European schools used for the subsequent 400+ years — but also…

…invented algebra. You know, nbd, just a Persian-Arab thing.

“Don’t do science?” The Islamic world •gave Europe science•, you dimwit. Not that RFK would know science if it came up and bit him.

  13. TIL that if you register your site with Google Search Console, you can switch off a “Search generative AI” setting to tell Google not to include your site’s content in its AI overviews.

I have serious doubts about whether this •actually• excludes the site. (Do they untrain their LLM?! Will they even block your site when retraining? I severely doubt it.)

However, I’m quite sure that it sends a signal to some sad, dark business analytics corner of Google. And it’s a signal I want to send.
