A cool thing about birding is that everyone can choose what’s enjoyable to them and it can change over time. Over the decade that I’ve done this, I find the most enjoyment in being by myself and taking time to figure out how to get nice photos of the birds I see.

There IS gatekeeping in birding, especially the photography part of it, and I think it’s mostly rooted in insecurity. I can relate to that, but there’s nothing anyone needs to feel insecure about. Your choices are your own, and as long as you’re doing what you want to do, it’s not important what other people think about it.

Thinking of Santa Rosa island and all of the areas and living things affected by the fire. I read that it reached the Torrey pine grove and Water Canyon. Just gutted.
