Eminent Indian astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar passed away recently. His name sounded familiar, so I digged a little and lo behold he was actually the author of one of my favorite childhood science books "A Journey through the Universe". With superb funny cartoons by Sudhir Dar, this book covered a huge swathe of science and was crucial in stoking my interest in the wonders of this world. This book made me!

Celeste & Jesse Forever is an enjoyable rom-com drama of a goofy young couple's journey of realization that they are not meant for each other, but still the best friends for each other. Rashida Jones is fantastic (also the writer), but Andy Samberg is a bit too goofy for the serious scenes. Los Angeles looks gorgeous and plays the third wheel.

Phantom Thread has perfectionist Daniel Day-Lewis as a 1950s London dressmaker with a controlling personality and the complicated relationship with his muse. Fantastic background score, acting, lighting, cinematography. But the plot was very confusing, so not interested in watching it again.
My rating: ★★★☆☆

Beverly Hills Cop II - Eddie Murphy returns to Beverly Hills in a plot that is pretty much the same as the first movie. Except it is a bit longer and less funnier.
Watched it streaming on Pluto TV.

Beverly Hills Cop is a good old 1980s crime comedy with Eddie Murphy as the Detroit detective investigating his friend's murder out west in Beverly Hills. Aged pretty well actually, since I enjoyed its lightheartedness from start to finish.
Watched it streaming on Pluto TV.

"Hock Tan's method at Broadcom is methodical. Identify a mature business that is critical for its customers. Buy it at a decent price. Cut it to the bone by reducing the workforce, eliminating less lucrative products and slashing R&D budgets. Jack up prices for captive clients. Harvest the cash. Fork it out to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, which big tech tends to shun. Take what is left and repeat."

I remember seeing this game in Stallone's Rambo 3.
"Afghanistan's national sport is Buzkashi, a rugged version of polo in which horse-mounted players fight to toss a goat carcass into a goal."

Story time with Mrs. Santa Claus at the Los Gatos Farmers Market. Good fun for the kids. 🎅

There are folks who are seriously collecting different types of bread tags - called Occlupanid. They have even been given latin names and classified and studied in a family tree like living organisms! And the tree continues to evolve as more varieties are found.

Started watching "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" on Amazon Prime from the very beginning. I used to catch random episodes in India when later seasons used to air on Star Plus/World. It is really cute to see it from the beginning as a British TV series. It takes about 5 episodes to find its groove and then it is off! SO MUCH pure fun! 😆

"A drugs company first trademarked the word "tabloid" in 1884. A portmanteau of “tablet” and “alkaloid”, denoted drugs in tablet form but quickly assumed a broader meaning: “anything compressed or concentrated for easy assimilation”. That also describes what has come to be known as tabloid journalism: brief sentences, punchy (and often incendiary) headlines, short articles, famous subjects."

@smurthys I haven't used it, but it looks like they are helping people gain a better credit score in a system that is stacked unfairly against such people. Some people know the tricks to gain higher score, this service is probably sharing access to such knowledge to everyone else.

"Entering a crowded lift on the way down is the equivalent of going into a saloon in a Western. No one is pleased to see you; the air crackles with hostility. Do not take it personally: just get in and take up as little space as possible. By the time someone on the next floor tries to enter, you will be part of the in-group and can glare at them." 😂

"John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group and pioneer of index funds, may have saved investors more money than anyone else in history. His crusade to drive down fees has, over the past 5 decades, left them with more than $1trn that would otherwise have gone to fund managers."

Iodine deficiency is coming back!
"Without iodine, the thyroid gland cannot produce hormones that enable the human body and the brain to develop properly. Iodine deficiency causes goitres (swellings in the neck) and can cause a 15-point drop in IQ."

"Highway 1 is the westernmost road in California. Only a guardrail and a steady hand prevent drivers from careening into the ocean. It was proposed at the end of the 19th century, & construction began in 1919. But the 656-mile route wasn’t finished until 1937. Built with prison labor, at least 70,000 pounds of dynamite & financing from Franklin Roosevelt’s PWA, it was one of many engineering marvels erected across America during the Depression."
