#OnThisDay, 19 Feb 1951, Egyptian activist Doria Shafik leads a crowd of 1,500 women onto the floor of the Egyptian parliament demanding equal rights for women.
As a result of her - and others' - activism, women were granted limited rights to vote in 1956. She spoke against the Nasser regime in 1957 and was placed under house arrest.

#OnThisDay, 25 Feb 1986, Corazon Aquino is sworn in as President of the Philippines. She is the first women to become President of the country, and to lead a country in Asia.
Aquino had won the election earlier in February but dictator Marcos refused to surrender power. The People Power Revolution demanded the restoration of democracy and the military supported her.

#OnThisDay, 10 Nov 1917, 41 suffragists are arrested outside the White House in Washington DC whilst protesting the force-feeding of suffragists in prison.
The “silent sentinels” were the first political group to picket the White House. From January 1917 to June 1919, over 2,000 women took turns at the protest. Around 500 were arrested in total, with 168 sent to prison.

She was crowned Elizabeth I the following year and remained Empress of Russia till her death in 1762. She had a policy of not executing people.

The Privy Council picked Anna as she was widowed and childless. They imposed a set of Conditions through which they would control her.
She literally tore them up, and continued her uncle Peter the Great’s modernisation.
Like many Russian Emperors and Empresses, she could be cruel, vindictive and abuse her power.
