Maybe free bees? if they're not the swarm from 5 days ago which would be unlikely unless they didn't like their first pick of a new home. The bait hive was very active yesterday, then it wasn't at all, then before dark it was really active again and some looking like they'd spend the night. This morning when I looked it was busy again so I put the GoPro up.

(these bees, once settled in, will once again be moved... this one to a small backyard orchard of a nurse my son knows.... They keep on showing up in the backyard, so we just catch them and move them as soon as they settle in...Can't stay here!) #beekeeping

The swarm box is seeing some scout activity. Maybe we'll have a feral colony move in tomorrow? 🐝🐝🐝

[New post] Taranov swarm control. A little-used method that partitions the queen and non-flying bees together very effectively (the opposite of the Pagden method). And some bonus ramblings on the impact of temperature.

Three new queens successfully laying. Will see how their brood compete against the SoCal ferals. 4 more ordered, we are replacing two queens regardless of their performance. (spicy!) #beekeeping

The scene of the new beehive location. It's a little sunny in the morning, then shady underneath the white spruce tree (yes, it shoudn't grow here), and then a few hours of blazing hot sun in the afternoon. It's probably not colder in the winter but more exposed to any north wind. This will only be for new hives, too close to move existing ones easily.

The new hive emptied the feeder so I checked on their progress. 6 frames of comb built it looked like all the way to one side. I mixed up some oxalic acid and glycerin and put some OAE pads on it too. There's a bit of a flow now so I probably won't feed anymore and I'll put another box on next week if they have the last few frames built out.

Swarm Trooper saw some action from a group of scouts today. I'd love to catch a feral swarm.
The video is in slow motion.

Good morning Mastodon! Hope you're all doing well. I'm at my desk but every joint in my body hurts. It'd be nice if that would stop. Life goes on though. Our ladies down south are looking very active this morning. With the sun hitting the entrance super early they're out by 7am warming up. I'm hoping we can add honey supers in a week or two. Just getting them strong is the goal right now. 🐝🐝🐝
Have a good day!

Sick or not, I went down to check the bees on my usual inspection schedule. The ladies seem to be doing well. It's a bit overcast today and cool which is probably slowing them down a bit.
