I finally got around to taking some more supers off the hives. I only had two double stacked but had taken one off a week ago then decided to get a hot weather jacket since it's always hot (review in ALT). I only pulled 2 more supers frame by frame since I needed to shake bees off. Have to extract some before I pull the rest. Logistic issues and someone hasn't put more medium frames together.

Today, my prose/almost-poem piece "Apistry" appears in Hyacinth Review:
https://hyacinthreview.org/david-milley-apistry/This piece shows Warren caring for his honeybees through the four seasons. It's brief and readable.

A few minutes of beekeeping finished. I combined the hopefully former laying worker hive with the last swarm I caught. I shook most of the bees off, half of them being drones it looked like, and put all but one of the 5 frames with comb in the bottom box and left them the top box since it won't be long for them to need it anyway and it's going to be 99F / 37C this week, which might be actual temps where his hive is since it's above the inversion sometimes.

Looked in the laying worker hive while I was walking by. Maybe less bees than when I moved it from the nuc a week ago.

The laying worker hive was placed on top with a double-screened divider between the hives. There might be one frame of bees in that hive and all the field bees will likely return and be welcome in the new colony. This is just to preserve the stores they have collected and send a few of the drones out to spread their love.
No drama during the move, no bees in the face, no bees on my arms, no bees up my shorts. Nice bees.

Some bees yesterday on the 'fetched from way up in a tree from the top of a ladder with a long pole' hive landing board.

Yesterday I added boxes the big swarm that was caught and the small swarm that moved into the bait hive that I put in a nuc. I also put Oxalic OAE pads in both of those hives and gave them both a jar of food since it was bare foundation added.
I also saw the really fast skinny snake for more than a few seconds. It's probably a Western yellow-bellied racer. I've seen it by these hives a a few times and down the hill by the shed too. No pic.

The new apiary is getting full. I had to pull the bait hive down that I had just put back up to take 4 frames out of but I only had 9 total so I had to glue up 5 frames then I reset the bait hive and added the 10th to the deep box and closed it up with a jar of food this evening. It's all on bare foundation freshly waxed. I kept two drawn frames in the bait hive to increase the chance of catching another swarm I don't need.

The scene of the new beehive location. It's a little sunny in the morning, then shady underneath the white spruce tree (yes, it shoudn't grow here), and then a few hours of blazing hot sun in the afternoon. It's probably not colder in the winter but more exposed to any north wind. This will only be for new hives, too close to move existing ones easily.

The new hive emptied the feeder so I checked on their progress. 6 frames of comb built it looked like all the way to one side. I mixed up some oxalic acid and glycerin and put some OAE pads on it too. There's a bit of a flow now so I probably won't feed anymore and I'll put another box on next week if they have the last few frames built out.

Honeyed Diplomacy: Melania Trump's Apiary Aims for Royal Palates
Melania Trump's White House apiary honey was featured in a dessert for King Charles and Queen Camilla's state dinner. See how it affects presidential events.

Honey from Melania Trump's White House beehive was used for a special dessert at the state dinner for King Charles. This is the first time honey from the expanded apiary has been used for such a high-profile event.

Since they are consuming it so fast I switched to honey at 1:1. This is two hours elapsed.

I decided to put a feeder on the new hive and they've consumed almost 400 grams of sugar in 15 hours. Randy Oliver says it takes 600g of sugar to build one deep frame of comb. It will be 5 days today since they were put in the box.

The new hive with the caught swarm has pollen going in and the bait hive might be back to scout bees and no robbing.

The captured bees seem to be doing bee things as it warms up. I peaked in the top deep around 9 am and there were no bees up in there so I took it off and there was no drama. It looked like they were clustered up into 3-4 frames but it's just waxed foundation so I guess there's lots of room in that space.

This same hive swarmed at the same degree days last year and it's not even the same bees unless the swarm I caught and put in the box was from there originally.
My bee log entry last night:
"Last year: April 23, 2025 107.4 + 184.9 = 292.3 Blossom degrees
Swarm day, West hive, might have been a fire drill,, but that meant queen flying.""Apr 18, 2026 Feb 8.5 + Mar 145.9 = 154.4 + 150.5 = 304.9 Blossom degrees"

One of the hives swarmed today and it was low enough in a tree I could catch it while standing 7 feet up on a ladder with a fiberglass pole I modified. Once most of the bees were caught the weight couldn't be held vertical and then I heard a crack from the pole I let it go and landed on my roof. I got them in an empty hive before dark.

The East hive. This would technically be the oldest hive since the OG queen moved here with a split, or maybe after I caught a queen wandering around after the split which I suspect was the old queen since I probably split them days before they would have swarmed or she couldn't fly good enough to swarm.. whatever, she was here and generally I'd say it's been the best hive but a bit swarmy. Lots of drones in this photo.

The White hive. Not much to say about it, I think it swarmed twice or more last year so I suppose it doesn't really have much character.

-
The Center hive. This hive always has lots of bees, and swarmed once last year so maybe the slight meanness of some bees went with that queen. It was like 1 of 100 bees would just hit you and sting you, no warning, when checking them.

The Green hive. This is the part of the split with the queen from the East hive. It's activity is picking up every day as more foragers take flight. They have a green 4 leaf clover and a water trough to help ID the hive and for other bees to see sooner it's not their hive. I noticed a lot of drift from other hives landing or almost landing before realizing it wasn't their hive.

The West hive. These bees seem to be smaller. They could just be young bees but I've seen the small ones bringing in pollen. They seem healthy and didn't have any issues over the winter. This was a swarm caught July 17 last year and combined here since this box had swarmed and I probably cleared out it's queen cell when checking things.
