#NSW police are appealing for information after dozens of #beehives were stolen from a property in the state’s Northern Tablelands.
The beehives – 80 boxes in total, worth about $150,000 – were taken some time between 31 March & 6 May from a rural property about 15km west of #Bonshaw village, 100km from #GlenInnes.
The boxes are described as cream in colour with blue baseboards, blue and white lids and red, clear boards. They were full of #bee colonies. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

The new hive emptied the feeder so I checked on their progress. 6 frames of comb built it looked like all the way to one side. I mixed up some oxalic acid and glycerin and put some OAE pads on it too. There's a bit of a flow now so I probably won't feed anymore and I'll put another box on next week if they have the last few frames built out.
-
Since they are consuming it so fast I switched to honey at 1:1. This is two hours elapsed.
-
The new hive with the caught swarm has pollen going in and the bait hive might be back to scout bees and no robbing.

The captured bees seem to be doing bee things as it warms up. I peaked in the top deep around 9 am and there were no bees up in there so I took it off and there was no drama. It looked like they were clustered up into 3-4 frames but it's just waxed foundation so I guess there's lots of room in that space.

This same hive swarmed at the same degree days last year and it's not even the same bees unless the swarm I caught and put in the box was from there originally.
My bee log entry last night:
"Last year: April 23, 2025 107.4 + 184.9 = 292.3 Blossom degrees
Swarm day, West hive, might have been a fire drill,, but that meant queen flying.""Apr 18, 2026 Feb 8.5 + Mar 145.9 = 154.4 + 150.5 = 304.9 Blossom degrees"

One of the hives swarmed today and it was low enough in a tree I could catch it while standing 7 feet up on a ladder with a fiberglass pole I modified. Once most of the bees were caught the weight couldn't be held vertical and then I heard a crack from the pole I let it go and landed on my roof. I got them in an empty hive before dark.

The East hive. This would technically be the oldest hive since the OG queen moved here with a split, or maybe after I caught a queen wandering around after the split which I suspect was the old queen since I probably split them days before they would have swarmed or she couldn't fly good enough to swarm.. whatever, she was here and generally I'd say it's been the best hive but a bit swarmy. Lots of drones in this photo.
5/5 🏁
-
The White hive. Not much to say about it, I think it swarmed twice or more last year so I suppose it doesn't really have much character.
-
The Center hive. This hive always has lots of bees, and swarmed once last year so maybe the slight meanness of some bees went with that queen. It was like 1 of 100 bees would just hit you and sting you, no warning, when checking them.
-
The Green hive. This is the part of the split with the queen from the East hive. It's activity is picking up every day as more foragers take flight. They have a green 4 leaf clover and a water trough to help ID the hive and for other bees to see sooner it's not their hive. I noticed a lot of drift from other hives landing or almost landing before realizing it wasn't their hive.
-
The West hive. These bees seem to be smaller. They could just be young bees but I've seen the small ones bringing in pollen. They seem healthy and didn't have any issues over the winter. This was a swarm caught July 17 last year and combined here since this box had swarmed and I probably cleared out it's queen cell when checking things.
-
The East hive has lots of bees and some queen cells and also some brood that hasn't hatched yet. This is all in the bottom box of a 2 deep box hive.
The hive split seems like it will be successful!
-
I checked the hives that were split 13 days ago. The Green hive that got the top box from East has lots of fresh brood so the queen was moved. This is the best scenario since most of the foragers would of went back to the other hive. I started seeing some new foragers in the last few days. Drones started flying 6 days ago.
-
The moved box of bees has hatched some drones and is slowly eating their fondant and pollen patty. They seemed pretty calm so maybe the queen was in this box. It's on top of the bottom box of a dead out that I left 4 frames with honey in plus the empty brood comb. It came from a full hive that received a full box of honey as the new upstairs. No foraging but I have seen them do cleansing flights and then return.

The bees are busy and still bringing in yellow pollen. Probably pussywillow, the elders claim to have picked them when they were young 'somewhere' here.

The fondant is slowly disappearing.

The bees are finding pollen and all the hives are busy bringing it in.

Bees are amazing and spring is the best time to start an apiary. If you've every considered starting your own bee yard to support these wonderful creatures, here's an open source resource to help you.

A bit of bee video from a couple of days ago. They're finding some bright orange/yellow pollen and probably still working the goldenrod.

The bottom box of the white nuc... it's two 5-frame boxes stacked.. has good brood pattern. It will be 10 frames of bees soon.
-
The Center hive didn't have any fully capped frames in the super, the West hive didn't have anything capped in the super and that hive swarmed on April 23.
I replaced all the oxalic acid pads in the hives and put them in the two new hives. It had been just over 10 weeks since they first ones of the year were placed.

There's a new API client Voiden which mixes Markdown with interactive HTTP request blocks. I guess each generation of developers is doomed to rediscover API Blueprint…

The bees in the nuc hives on this cool and windy Sunday morning that was 57F or 14C when the video was recorded. I think the plan is to move the green bees into a 10 frame deep, and give the white nuc a top box since they started with fewer bees. The queens have only been laying for a week to ten days (hopefully) so a couple of weeks will reveal the new activity.

The nuc hives seem to be doing good. The green one has more pollen coming in, the white one is taking more syrup.

What do you think? A queen?
Returning from a mating flight.. It's been 5 days since frames with queen cells were put in the nuc but maybe she was already emerged and I didn't see her. They say 6 days to mature but these are bees so they have their own plans.

Busy bees, April 4, 2025. Pollen going in and I see some drones at the Center hive. The hybrid willows are blooming and full of bees, and the Norway Maples, sarvis berries, peaches, and plum will be blooming in a few days probably.

I put the oxalic acid pads in the hives today. Each hive gets 50 grams of oxalic acid that is mixed with 50 grams of glycerin. The glycerin is heated to LESS than 170F/76C before the oxalic acid is mixed in and then the Swedish dishcloths are cut in half and soaked in the mixture.
This was the Center hive that has the most bees.
No stings, no drama, no surprises.

Put a feeder on my Center hive yesterday with 2:1 syrup. Less than 20 hours and more than a third appears to be gone. This was the high population hive that felt light. Consecutive rainy days forecast and not much to forage on.

Bees are bringing in dark yellow pollen today. No hazel pollen and the bees are done with the snowdrops so I'm not sure what they're finding. Tallest daffodil in the warmest spot here is only a few inches sprouted up. Maybe so other kind of early blooming tree around. Whatever it is the bees like it.

This is the "East hive" that has the old queen from the almost 2 years ago swarm. The upper deep box was still heavy so they have plenty of food. No moisture issues from this hive or the "West hive" and it had adequate weight also.

Checked the hives today to verify they had enough food. This is the 'Center hive' and the quilt box was very wet and had a little mold starting to grow in it. I took all the pine shavings out and wiped it down with some tea tree oil soap after I was done checking them. Lots of bees in this hive and I might have to feed it if the weather turns cool or rainy.

This is the West hive today. I've seen each of the 3 hives busy now so I think they made it through the winter ok so I'll just have to see how much food they have left one of these days while it's sort of warm. Cooler and wet weather coming they say.
