  3. Dum Dum Girls - End of Daze

After Only in Dreams, Dee Dee released these semi-leftover tracks from those sessions...things she must have felt didn't quite fit on the album.

Not a comment on their quality: this is a great EP. Alas, there'd only be one more album after this...

  8. Genesis - Genesis

This starts off strong with the eerie Mama, although it feels like it belongs on a Collins solo LP... as do a few more of the tracks here.

At this point, Genesis has really become a pop band, with a few "proggier" tracks popping up here and there (especially towards the end). I think this LP was probably their biggest selling one, and may be the peak of their post-prog period.

  13. Horsegirl - Phonetics On and On

This is a pretty big pivot from the first (very good) album.

It starts off with what sounds like it's going to be a cover of Roadrunner (but isn't), and *greatly* pares back the more shoegaze-y sound of the debut, to excellent effect.

Imagine Stereolab without keyboards playing in a garage, and you're part way there.

Produced by Cate Le Bon; you can hear her influence, and their confidence in a new direction.

  18. Walter Smith III - Twio Vol. 2

I've featured Smith a few times here, and this is his latest—a continuation of 2018's Twio (out on Whirlwind, long sold out on vinyl, but you can get it digitally on Bandcamp).

The idea being: get together great players, grab some classic tunes, and go—a few takes per.

Here we have Smith (tenor) with Joe Sanders (bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums)...but half the tracks have Ron Carter (bass) and Brandon Marsalis (tenor).

  19. Lou Donaldson Quintet - Wailing with Lou

1957 release from Donaldson (alto), recently re-released by Blue Note for the Tone Poet Society, and remastered by Kevin Grey.

This very enjoyable album starts with a huge burst of energy (Ellington's Caravan), and moves through a set of bop and hard-bop tunes, all played with verve and style.

Features Donald Byrd (trumpet), Herman Foster (piano), Peck Morrison (bass), and Art Taylor (drums).

  20. Richard Hawley - Coles Corner

Another one of those "hard to believe this is 20 years old" albums.

Hawley briefly toured with Pulp (not to mention R.E.M.), and was a member of Longpigs back in the day. But mostly he's released a series of great solo records, of which this is the fourth.

These are classically arranged broken heart songs—think Orbison/Isaac)—a good LP to follow the romance of Aldana's Filin.

  25. Melissa Aldana - Filin

Filin—derived from Feeling—is a very "romantic style" album of ballads: think Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderly, Ben Webster, et al.

Aldana is joined by Cuban-born Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano), Peter Washington (bass) and Kush Abadey (drums), and Cécile McLorin Salvant (v) on a few tracks.

It's a terrific record from start to finish: great tunes, beautifully played, and well recorded.
