CW: No sensitive or distressing content. This article discusses youth engineering achievements, model aircraft and competitive aeromodelling.
Meet the Young Aerospace Champion Behind the F-1D Model That Flew for 22 Minutes
The young aerospace engineering champion prepares to launch his independently designed F-1D prototype, showcasing the precision and ingenuity behind competitive aeromodelling.Dear Cherubs, the future of aerospace engineering apparently has no intention of waiting until adulthood to make an entrance. A young world champion has reportedly unveiled an independently designed F-1D model aircraft, with an impressive flight duration that demonstrates just how much engineering can be packed into something weighing barely more than a sheet of paper.
The achievement is a reminder that you don’t need a jet engine, a billionaire’s budget or a control room full of blinking screens to make aviation enthusiasts pay attention. Sometimes, all it takes is an exceptionally light aircraft, a clever design and a frankly unreasonable amount of patience.
The young engineer’s prototype is being presented as a product of independent design and construction, intended for demanding aeromodelling competitions. However, publicly available information does not yet independently establish every detail of the specific prototype or its reported 22-minute flight. So, let’s separate what is known about the technology from what remains to be confirmed.
Small Aircraft, Serious Engineering
First, a little clarification: F1D is an internationally recognised indoor free-flight model aircraft class governed by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). It is not a miniature fighter jet, despite the sort of name that might suggest otherwise.
According to the FAI, F1D models are extraordinarily lightweight aircraft powered by twisted rubber motors. Their delicate structures typically use balsa wood and thin plastic film, with strict limits on weight and dimensions. In this category, every fraction of a gram matters.
The aircraft climbs and circles through an indoor space after launch, using stored energy in its wound rubber motor to turn the propeller. As the motor gradually unwinds, the plane must make the most of its remaining energy to stay airborne.
There is no conventional remote-control system guiding every movement. Instead, competitors rely on careful construction, precise adjustments and an understanding of aerodynamics. In other words, the plane may be tiny, but the brainpower behind it certainly isn’t.
According to the FAI, F1D models are capable of flights lasting up to 40 minutes under suitable conditions. A reported 22-minute flight is therefore entirely plausible, although the duration alone does not establish a world record.
Why Every Gram Counts
Building a competitive F1D aircraft is a balancing act between strength, stability and weight. Make the structure too heavy and the model loses efficiency. Make it too fragile and transporting it becomes an exercise in holding your breath.
Wing shape, propeller design, rubber-motor performance and the aircraft’s balance all influence how long it can remain aloft. Even seemingly insignificant adjustments can affect the final result.
That is what makes junior aeromodelling competitions so interesting. Young competitors aren’t simply assembling toys or copying a design from a kit. In the FAI’s F1D world-championship class, the builder must construct their own model in accordance with the competition rules.
The 2024 FAI Junior World Championship results list Daniel Guo of the United States as the individual winner, with a combined score of 53 minutes and nine seconds from his two best flights. That is a different measurement from a single 22-minute flight, and the distinction matters when discussing records or competition results.
The Bigger Picture
Whether this particular prototype ultimately secures further recognition or not, the underlying achievement highlights the creativity and technical discipline involved in competitive aeromodelling.
Young engineers learn to test ideas, measure results, identify weaknesses and improve their designs. Those skills are relevant far beyond model aircraft, extending into robotics, materials science and the aerospace industry itself.
And perhaps that is the most exciting part. The next generation of engineers isn’t necessarily waiting for permission to start innovating. Some are already building, testing and refining their ideas while the rest of us are still trying to assemble flat-pack furniture without arguing with the instructions.

When Television Finally Found Its Colour
From monochrome screens to full colour, television was about to become considerably more vivid.Dear Cherubs, television had already become the living room’s favourite glowing rectangle when colour arrived and essentially said, “Lovely, but what if we made it prettier?” The change was gradual, expensive and surprisingly complicated—but it permanently altered how audiences experienced television.
THE COLOUR PROBLEM
Colour television was not a single invention that suddenly appeared in everyone’s homes. Engineers had been experimenting with colour systems for years, while broadcasters and regulators wrestled with competing technologies and standards.
According to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the RCA-compatible colour system in December 1953, with regular colour broadcasting beginning in January 1954. The technology worked, but there was a rather substantial catch: buying a colour television was expensive.
The Smithsonian records that colour sets in the mid-1950s could cost hundreds of dollars, with some RCA models reaching $895. For many households, that was a spectacular amount of money to spend simply to discover that most programmes were still being produced in black and white.
And so colour television entered the world with something resembling a marketing problem. Broadcasters needed viewers to buy colour sets, while viewers quite reasonably wanted more colour programming before spending the money. Classic chicken-and-egg territory, only with cathode-ray tubes.
By 1955, the Smithsonian estimates that roughly 15,000 colour television sets were in American households. By 1959, sales had risen substantially, but colour remained far from universal.
THE SCREEN COMES ALIVE
The real transformation gathered pace during the 1960s. The FCC later reported that colour-set penetration in U.S. households was only 4.9 percent at the beginning of 1965. By 1970, it had climbed to 35.7 percent, helped by the expansion of colour programming across the major commercial networks.
The visual difference was more than cosmetic. Colour gave costume designers, set designers and cinematographers another storytelling tool. A red dress could become a plot device. A green landscape could communicate place instantly. Sports broadcasts gained another layer of visual information, while advertisements became considerably more persuasive when products could actually look like themselves.
Britain followed its own timetable. The BBC began regular colour television service on BBC Two in 1967, with Wimbledon among the early headline broadcasts. BBC historical records note that colour arrived on BBC One in 1969, bringing major British programming into the colour era.
The technology even changed how audiences experienced historic events. NASA’s Apollo missions used colour television cameras during the lunar-landing era, allowing viewers to see images from space in colour rather than relying entirely on monochrome pictures.
Today, the idea of television being impressive because it has colour sounds almost hilariously basic. We expect high definition, enormous screens, HDR, streaming and pictures so sharp they can reveal details nobody asked to see.
But colour television was one of the crucial steps along that road. It changed what producers could create, what advertisers could sell and what audiences expected from their screens.
Black and white television didn’t disappear overnight. Colour simply made the old world look, well, a little less colourful.

China’s Hidden Forest: The 300-Metre “Cave” That Isn’t Quite a Cave
Leye tiankeng in Guangxi, China, part of the region’s remarkable karst landscape. Photo: Qiu Mao, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0.Dear Cherubs, China’s Guangxi region contains enormous natural pits where forests grow hundreds of metres below the surrounding landscape, which sounds like something invented by a fantasy novelist after a particularly productive lunch. But the geology is very real.
The confusing part is that several remarkable sinkholes in the same region are often bundled together in online stories. One is about 192 metres deep and became famous in 2022 after explorers discovered a forest at its bottom. Another, Liuxing Tiankeng, reaches about 300 metres. And the enormous Dashiwei Tiankeng has been explored to roughly 600 metres below the surrounding ground.
So, yes, there really are forests hundreds of metres down in Guangxi. But calling the whole thing “a cave with a forest 300 metres underground” is technically a little wonky.
THE “HEAVENLY PIT”
These formations are known in Chinese as tiankeng, meaning “heavenly pit”. They are giant karst sinkholes formed over geological timescales as groundwater dissolves carbonate rock, gradually creating underground cavities before sections of the roof collapse.
The result can be spectacular: huge vertical limestone walls surrounding a depression that looks almost like an entrance to another world.
The 2022 discovery in Leye County measured approximately 306 metres long, 150 metres wide and 192 metres deep. Researchers found three caves in its walls and a remarkably dense forest at the bottom, including trees approaching 40 metres in height.
And that forest is not simply sitting in eternal darkness. The enormous opening allows sunlight and rainwater to reach the floor, creating conditions where substantial vegetation can survive.
A FOREST WITH ITS OWN RULES
The isolation is what makes these places scientifically interesting. Steep walls, difficult access and distinctive microclimates can create environments where plants and animals experience conditions rather different from those on the surrounding plateau.
UNESCO notes that around 300 tiankengs have been identified in China and describes them as important refuges for plant, animal and microbial diversity. Researchers have also suggested that some could contain species not yet documented by science.
The really spectacular depth comes with Dashiwei. According to UNESCO, researchers descended roughly 600 metres to its bottom in 2016 and encountered an underground forest containing trees around 40 metres tall, along with rare plants.
UNESCO also records Liuxing Tiankeng in Leye County as approximately 300 metres deep. So the “300-metre forest” version of the story isn’t completely bonkers; it is simply mixing together several extraordinary geological neighbours.
That distinction matters because the real story is arguably better. China isn’t hiding one mysterious underground forest. It has an entire landscape of gigantic natural pits, some hundreds of metres deep, containing ecosystems that scientists are still trying to understand.
As noted by thisclaimer.com, sometimes Earth does not need science fiction to produce something properly weird. It just needs a few million years, some limestone and a lot of groundwater.
And honestly, the planet has been showing off again.
