  2. Today's wonder: Tsingy de Bemaraha, Madagascar — a stone forest of razor-sharp limestone pinnacles rising tens of meters high.

Rain and groundwater dissolved these blades from ~200-million-year-old Late Jurassic marine limestone over millions of years. "Tsingy" means "where one cannot walk barefoot" in Malagasy — and it's a UNESCO World Heritage site. 🪨

  4. Lovely to find out that my children have swiped my good Hakko snips to cut their model parts out of the runners, and somehow fouled up the blades so that they no longer line up quite right.

  5. A woman walked into the shop of magic and mystery. She wasn't happy.

"I bought this fairy goddess from you, and not only do her poems fail to inspire me, they're often flat out wrong."

    "When did you buy her?"

"And she only started imparting wisdom through prose recently? Check the back."

Sure enough, between the shoulder blades: a best-if-mused-by date.

  6. There's a redesigned "thermal module" from Lenovo for an eye watering €200-€300, out of stock in most places.

This includes the vapour chamber, which is however absolutely fine and I just need the fans.

AliExpress has only the fans for a tenth of that price (plus the aggravating anti-China EU tariffs). Still cheaper than off Allegro though, so your tariffs aren't working, guys. The fans also look like a revised design with a plastic ring connecting the blades instead of the former open blades which fell off.

Might last longer. This thing is only 5.5 years old, gotta keep working much longer yet.

Hope they come soon. After prying out all the broken blades, the fan spins but is imbalanced and vibrates unpleasantly.

    At least suspend/resume works again.

  7. Laptop has been behaving oddly of late. Massive clock drift and unable to suspend/resume. Turns out both rely on the little CR2016 "CMOS" battery, which was empty.

No problem, especially if you have a battery tab spot welder and can just pry the nickel tabs off the old and weld them onto a new CR2032 battery. Double the capacity and not getting scammed €16 for a 20 cent battery.

However, it was also due a cleanout and when I took it to the air compressor, along with the dust half the fan blades blew away too. Huh, that's never happened before.

Apparently some problem with a) flimsy fan design and b) aging plastic getting brittle. Apparently these usually failed even earlier.

    There's a ....
