后羿是遠古時期有窮國的國王，力大無窮，勇武善射，但性格暴躁，濫施苛政，弄得民不聊生。后羿想長生不老，他於是從王母娘娘那裡拿來了可以成仙得道的靈藥。美麗善良的妻子嫦娥得知此事，為使百姓免受后羿長期的殘暴統治，就偷偷把仙藥吃了，化作仙女飄向月宮，成了月宮中的神女。
