Currently listening to: the new Xiu Xiu covers album. It’s pretty good; I particularly like their Badalamentian take on the Daniel Johnston song, and the suicide-note bleakness of the Robyn cover. Meanwhile, Warm Leatherette is probably exactly how you’d imagine a Xiu Xiu cover of that to be.

This evening, I saw Xiu Xiu doing their new #Eraserhead-themed show at Slaktkyrkan in Stockholm. It was sublime.

Following up the Twin Peaks show they did a few years ago, this is their second foray into the world of David Lynch (an artist whose aesthetics had an undeniable impact on them). Unlike Twin Peaks, Eraserhead doesn’t have a body of well-defined songs (with one exception), so this show (and the album of it, which will hopefully be out next year) is more a work of ominously impressionistic soundscapes. Drones, found sounds, the sounds of physical objects and the occasional shouted/screamed vocal and lick of organ, played (almost) wordlessly by the seated duo, behind whom is projected a slideshow of vaguely disquieting black and white photographs, like some kind of Koyaanisqatsi meets Faces Of Death. This went on for most of an hour, and then the screen faded to pink and then white, and Jamie started tapping a rhythm on a small bell. You could hear the proverbial pin drop when they started singing the film’s one iconic song, their voice sounding fragile, as Angela played the tune on a tonewheel-organ sound, sounding like a transmission from a lost radio station. Then Jamie closed the show cathartically by smashing some glass bottles in an oil drum.

The Eraserhead show is still apparently in its early stages (there was no merch, for one), so this may well evolve slightly, though in its current state it was already excellent. If you get a chance to see it, it’s worth doing.
