  1. CW: October Daye Cosplay and Spike the Rose Goblin

Last weekend we went to #WorldCon / #LAConV for a day. It was our first convention since 2019 (for, you know, reasons), and my wife finally got to build a rose goblin and cosplay as October Daye, something she's been planning to for years. (Basically since we were gifted the jacket.)

Spike is described in the books as a cross between a rose bush and a cat. Three  craft store grape-vine wreaths, soaked for reshaping, give it structure. Bougainvillea vines are woven through it to add thorns, though she ended up trimming them so it wouldn't be hazardous if someone grabbed it, or if someone else's costume brushed up against it. (We both managed to stab ourselves on the thorns while she was making it.) She cut a bunch of artificial leaves to look like rose leaves, and sewed them onto the vines.

For the eyes, a pair of LEDs are hooked up to a battery (the switch hidden under leaves) and placed inside mini ping-pong balls, held in place inside the head by wire.

Originally she was planning to put it on a skateboard and pull it along behind her, holding it on using magnets and washers, but the magnets turned out not to be strong enough. So the day before the con, she scrapped the skateboard and built a handle into Spike's back so she could carry it around. It turned out to be better anyway, since the skateboard wouldn't have gone on an escalator.

    Edit: Cross-posted at my blog.

  6. This panel with Craig Miller and Geri Sullivan showed a re-creation of a slide show that was presented at the 34th World Science Fiction Convention (MidAmeriCon) in early September of 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri to promote the film #StarWars that was due to be released in May 1977. #LAconV #WorldCon2026 #WorldCon #LosAngelesWorldCon 1/6

  7. Went to a panel today to hear about #MaryRobinetteKowal 's "talking cat" Elsie. #ElsieTheTalkingCat

Elsie doesn't speak English but knows how to use buttons with words to convey what she wants to say. I think she knows about 140 words right now. It was really fascinating to hear about. Love the sticker! Elsie is at:

  10. This weekend is full of literary activities for me. I'll be attending @LAcon virtually, and have a session where @carturo222 interviews me about my films. If you are attending, do tune in for a live video interview.

  12. Anyone thinking of going to #WorldCon this year, who doesn't have a ticket yet? I now have a spare, selling at a good discount. I need to sell this week, though - before the 13th. #WorldCon2026 #LAConV
Please boost for exposure - not sure anyone's seen this. $100 cheaper than buying a ticket now!

  14. I will be so happy when we have a Worldcon that finally drops posting on X/Twitter. It’s always a little disappointing to see that our community is still hanging out in the Nazi bar. I would argue — and did, for Seattle 2025, though I didn’t prevail — that the benefit of setting an example and standing up for our professed values by not posting there is worth more than what little promotion that cesspool of a platform provides.

And yes, I know that there are still a lot of authors there. That’s disappointing, too.

  15. I wonder will this year's Worldcon be the last one held in the United States.

If you are a member of the #Worldcon2025 or #worldcon2026 you can nominate me if you think I am worthy.

    You have until March28.

Remember that @MicroSFF , @Unixbigot , @FutzleFiction , and @vanellopemint are also eligible and deserving (in my opinion).
