Goat – Requiem [2016], dieci anni dopo

Un disco che ha retto bene i colpi degli anni e che anzi è migliorato mentre cresceva è il terzo dei Goat, Requiem. Quando uscì, nel 2016, dovette subire il confronto innanzitutto coi precedenti dei Goat stessi, che avevano acceso gli animi con una mista di psichedelia, afrobeat, raga indiani, riffoni carichi di fuzz e wah wah e due impressionanti voci femminili a dare la carica, e perciò forse venne un po’ snobbato: tanti non accettarono l’idea di un disco folk, a tratti delicato, poco distorto e tanto strumentale; prevalse l’idea che fosse un’opera media, al limite discreta, fioccarono i giudizi compiacenti ma trattenuti. Riascoltato oggi, invece, con la prospettiva del tempo passato e mettendolo a fianco di altri dischi decenni – alcuni dei quali, è evidente, non hanno retto la botta – assume un altro sapore e un’altra profondità.

Il folk di Requiem è musica popolare multicolore e multiculturale i cui antenati vengono dall’Africa, dall’India, dal sud del Mediterraneo e dall’America Latina; è immersa in questa storia e tuttavia sembra non fare alcuno sforzo per assomigliare a qualcosa in particolare, e la firma della band ce l’ha stampata in fronte.

Gli strumentali spadroneggiano, ma cosa gli volete dire a dei pezzi come Goatband o Goodbye? Che sono troppo narcotici? Cosa vi aspettate dalla «psichedelia», le canzonette con la chitarra in riverbero? Suvvia. E non si può certo affermare che manchi il materiale per ballare. Ce n’è anzi da vendere ed è di ottima fattura: gli inni apripista da cantare a squarciagola I Sing in Silence, Trouble in the Streets, Try My Robe e Union of Mind and Soul sono già diventati dei classici. Il giro di flauto dell’ultima ha la stessa potenza ipnotica del riff di chitarra di Seven Nation Army – ed è un cazzo di flauto, non so se rendo l’idea. E poi c’è Goatfuzz, una carica col fuzz in spalla lanciata da due voci indemoniate che termina in una coda raga acidissima: non è forse tra le migliori del suo Goatgenere?

È un disco strano e alieno questo Requiem, non è conciso e immediato come i suoi fratelli più grandi e necessitava di tempo per aprirsi e fiorire. Questo mi è parso di capire. È un’opera che tiene tanti mondi insieme allineandoli l’uno accanto all’altro in un racconto che appare sempre più coerente, sempre più affascinante e grande a ogni ascolto, e che stacca di chilometri per carattere e fervore tante cose più blasonate.

I did eventually get around to nabbing a few more Ott records, though still not 'Mir'. I'll also maintain if you want to bring folks into the psy-dub fold, this album is a strong starting point, the musicianship on here solid and catchy without getting too weird as so much psy does.
