  1. A related thing, which by chance I also read today, is this bit from @robinince's book "Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal", quoting autistic coder Jamie:

"'There are some of us who do our best everything in these long, flowy attention tunnels. But we have a society that is increasingly designed not to create flowing attention tunnels.' ... The whole concept of a nine-to-five doesn't take into account how somebody gets into the place to creatively fulfill the needs of their work.

"... Rather than tasks, [Jamie] designs his days around tunnels. If he starts his day by getting into a flow state, then he can get lots of things done. But if he starts the day with a task hanging over him, he'll get nothing done. ...

"'When I get up in the morning, I'm more focused on "how do I get into that flow state" than I am about "how do I get started on task X".'"

  3. I'm appreciating this discussion at @askamanager about work rhythms and neurodiversity:

    E.g. this comment from CanadianDot:

"As someone with ADHD, I tend to work in deep, intense, super fast bursts, leaving me with more time that I’m not working. My output is still high level, at the same or more quantity than my peers. ... I like to think of it as not that I’m not working enough hours, but that I spend a lot of those “not working” hours letting ideas and energy coalesce in my brain that then get dumped out all at once.

"... I used to feel like I wasn’t doing enough because I had more time between tasks than it seemed like everyone else did, but I’ve learned that it’s just my working process. OP, if you’re getting the job done, that’s what matters, not the time it takes."
