"We at Woolworths need to innovate by reducing our prices and improving the quality of our products and service to win customers from our competitor, Coles. If we don't, all our customers will go to them instead of us, and we'll go broke!"
What actually happens in Australia:
"Hey look, Coles is getting away with a new way of screwing over its customers/suppliers/workers. We need to roll out that form of enshittification across our stores too. Most of our customers have no other convenient choice except for them and us, and because the same bullshit happens at both chains, the only thing that'll happen if they switch is they'll lose their rewards points!"

Disingenuous maths on woolies' behalf here. I haven't saved $32 in a month by paying for a year's worth of free deliveries. I've saved $8, since I always pick a $2 delivery slot regardless of having a "delivery unlimited" subscription. They use a different number to calculate the service-affirming value they send in the billing emails.

If you get grocery deliveries from woolies: There's currently 50% off the free deliveries for a year deal, comes out to AUD$60. I always order our weekly deliveries on Tuesdays to get the $2 rate, so we'll save AUD$40 over the year. Worth it!
Just gotta remember to cancel before it renews without the discount.

Recently, I've been trying to find ways to avoid the Colesworths supermarket duopoly as much as possible.
I'm pulling together a cheat sheet of alternatives. If you have any suggestions you can recommend, please leave them as a comment.
Some will be more expensive (IGA and Foodworks), but others (like grocery clearance stores and Aldi) less so. Hopefully it balances out.
It's also important to note there's likely to be far more alternatives if you're in Melbourne or Sydney than a remote or rural area.
The starting point is to stop thinking in terms of a one-stop shop.
Even if you're in a very Colesworth dependent town, even shifting some of your grocery shopping to a local bakery or green grocer is a win.
The starting point: Shopping local. If there's a local bakery, green grocer, deli, butcher, etc., then support them.
A good tip on this front is discount chemists often stock toiletries and household cleaning products at prices comparable to Colesworths.

Woolies is no friend of workers.
The Fair Work Commission is not fair.The United Workers Union got Woolies management to finally agree not to punish workers for their speed of work, and to give workers a boost in wages.
The "framework" that Woolies was trying to foist on its warehouse workers would have required warehouse staff to achieve a 100% performance and speed.
The union called it "dangerous, inhumane and unsafe". I consider it unrealistic for humans, dangerous for robots, and certain to cause injuries to anyone nearby in a short time. Think about it for a moment you'll see it was absolutely bonkers and whoever proposed it should be sacked for posing such a dire OH&S risk.
This debacle has shown that the Fair Work Commission is not fair and impartial.
Furthermore, Woolies has blown millions of dollars to show everyone they're no friend of workers.I urge you to continue your boycott of Woolies, and start campaigning to have the Governor General clear-out LNP stooges from the FWC.

Woolworths wins Fair Work Commission bid against United Workers Union

And, it sets a bad precedent. Other large retailers with distribution centres around Australia will be looking at this news and thinking they can screw their workers the same way and not face a picket-line outside their warehouses.
It's also worth noting that the Fair Work Commission has been stacked by LNP cronies over the last few years when the LNP were in government and had power over appointments. I'm sure many people at the Fair Work Commission try to be impartial, but it shouldn't come as a surprise when they sometimes make decisions that favour big business. The LNP has a long history of undermining "independent umpires" -- workers at Woolies and the United Workers Union are not on a level playing field.
The good news is that the United Workers Union is likely lodge an appeal, so they're still in with a fight.
My personal boycott of Woolies remains in place -- my partner & I are instead shopping at other supermarkets and local grocers, and we're thinking of making the boycott permanent. I suggest you show solidarity with the workers and boycott Woolies.
