  1. Alarm raised over ‘privacy dilemma’ of facial recognition technology at Coles and Woolworths
By Catie McLeod Consumer affairs reporter

  2. Shoplifting crime wave?! Putting facial recognition technology everywhere will fix it | First Dog on the Moon

  3. “Coles and Woolworths have conducted tests of #FacialRecognition #technology, but it is unclear if either supermarket will be implementing it in stores.

It comes after the #AustraliaFinancialReview reported both Coles and Woolworths had trialled the technology as part of an ongoing effort to combat retail crime.”

If cameras were in the #BoardRoom and key executive offices #CorporateCrime in the two #SuperMarkets would be reduced (Staff underpayments, price collusion with suppliers, brand replacement) 🤪🤣☺️

  4. Hey heads up, the carbonell olive oil at #woolworths does not appear to be entirely olive oil.
It doesn't react the same to temperature changes as the other olive oil we've got, and smells/tastes pretty heavily of canola.

  5. SA’s vineyards are shrinking. Sauvignon Blanc is not

A recent vertical of Hermanuspietiersfontein’s aged and wooded Sauvignon Blanc, named Kat. Once synonymous with affordable supermarket whites, Sauvignon Blanc is i…

  6. Is anyone collecting the Ooshies toys from Woolworths? I've just been saying no when they ask me if I want them.. but would anyone be interested in getting some more sent to them?

  7. One of the major supermarket chains in NZ is offering only 1 source of Brazil nuts, the in-store brand. The bulk bin version isn't available anyway, but costs *more*. Why?

This single price comparison exposes the fragility of our food supply chain in Aotearoa. If this one company goes bust, we can't just buy the same products elsewhere. With offshore suppliers so far away, if we need to find new sources, Why do we tolerate this commercial monocropping?

  8. A ‘buttery’ mouthfeel or ‘meadow grass’ notes? How Australian olive oils rank against other supermarket options
    By Eleanor Burnard

Consumer advocacy group Choice blind tested 30 olive oils – and found many of the highest ranked came from Australia

  9. @jhaue I noticed this at #NewWorld & #Woolworths in NZ, every time I need #cheese, its on special at one, next week at the other.
    Same for #pasta, whole #chicken, #yoghurts.
#Chippy? Brand A will be on sale at one, brand B at the other.

  10. How neoclassical economists claim competition works:

"We at Woolworths need to innovate by reducing our prices and improving the quality of our products and service to win customers from our competitor, Coles. If we don't, all our customers will go to them instead of us, and we'll go broke!"

    What actually happens in Australia:

"Hey look, Coles is getting away with a new way of screwing over its customers/suppliers/workers. We need to roll out that form of enshittification across our stores too. Most of our customers have no other convenient choice except for them and us, and because the same bullshit happens at both chains, the only thing that'll happen if they switch is they'll lose their rewards points!"

  11. Greenwashing, now available in your local grocery store..

"More than 27,000 packaged foods sold at Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, IGA and Harris Farm supermarkets in Sydney were assessed by researchers from the George Institute for Global Health.

Nearly four in 10 products carried some sort of sustainability claim, the study in Public Health Nutrition found.

Associate Prof Alexandra Jones, the institute’s program lead for food governance, said the majority of claims were self-declared by the manufacturer, without independent verification.

“Consumers are increasingly trying to make food choices that are good for the planet, and manufacturers know it. What we’re finding is that the labels designed to guide those choices are largely unregulated and that creates real risks of greenwashing.”

Out of 69 different environmental claims identified by the researchers, “natural” and “vegan” appeared most often. Some, like “sustainable” or “natural”, were so broad as to be almost meaningless, she said.

“There’s no legal meaning of ‘natural’, but we know that people associate it with being better for you, or being better for the environment,” she said. “But many things are natural that are not good in a health context. Sugar is natural – that doesn’t mean it’s good for you.”"

  12. ACCC is taking Woolworths to court over its "Prices Dropped" promotions.
The watchdog alleges the supermarket used fake discounts on over 260 items — briefly jacking up the "was" price before "dropping" it to something that was often still higher than the old regular price.
    Woolworths denies misleading shoppers.
    Classic supermarket pricing games?

  13. Loving that Woolies staff wear body cams now, nice and dystopian. Who controls that footage? Where is it stored? How is it secured? How long is it kept? At what point do I consent to being filmed by staff, just upon entering the store?

  14. Want to get ripped of at Woolworths or Coles?

Buy the heavy reduced bottles of
    Cussons
    Radiant
    Commercial Blend

And then discover that "Commercial Blend" means it is diluted to half strength and you'll need to add 2 capfuls instead of 1 capful to your wash.

"Commercial" here looks to mean "piss in the customers' pockets to give them a warm feeling while you fleece them".

  15. Praise to the ABC is a rare thing, but warranted for their interview re: the EDM hilarity of "I Love Stealing From Woolies" from Elektronik Girl Epic aka EGE.

"When we asked EGE how she and the crew could have possibly gotten away with this, she laughed. "I think the majority of gen z workers don't get paid enough to care about a mild disruption in aisle 4."”
