Today in 1894, the first Quebec Winter Carnival begins. Running until Feb. 3, it features an ice palace captured at the legislature & decorated ice sculptures and arches.

February 1886–St. Paul Winter Carnival ice palace. Most of the block ice was from the Mississippi River. It was one of the first places in St. Paul to have electricity. Tickets were 25cents.
