Like when I first watched Tokyo Revengers, I was surprised by the emphasis on feelings and friendship in an anime about fighting delinquents, but still there was a very clear hierarchy and even though you were kinda friends with your superior, you were also a bit scared of him - and if he gave you an order and you talked back, he might scream at you to remind you of your place.
Whereas in Wind Breaker, it feels like your superiors are there mostly for advice, help and support. Even when talking to the captain of the whole team, the guy is very relaxed (literally chilling on the roof growing tomatoes lol) and will listen seriously to people who came into Fūrin yesterday.
It's especially emphasized when superiors remind the MC that, as leader of his small group, his #1 priority is to protect and support his comrades.
The treatment of the "enemy teams" is also interesting, as often a defeat ends up in them becoming friends, or even in Fūrin helping them out of the tough situation that lead them to attack in the first place 💚So yeah, good vibes all around!

Oh and on top of all of this, there's some really lovely gender queer representation after the first couple main arcs. The character Tasuku Tsubakino goes by he/him pronouns (at least in the translation) but is unapologetically fem and is FUCKING DELIGHTFUL.
(I'm using gender queer and not trans because I think there's more nuance at play in the portrayal, and because Tsubakino uses male pronouns. I am unsure if there's a cultural aspect that I'm not grasping as an American, so I'm trying to keep the definition more open and fluid? Could, certainly be wrong.)

I spend most of my for pleasure reading time these days reading manga. I picked up Windbreaker in May on a whim (thinking it was Blue Lock which a good friend has been in love with for years).
Let me tell you something: this manga is the most wholesome, generous, and kind thing I've read in a long time. Its modus operandi is to take a shonen genre staple, pick apart the deeply toxic ideas as the core of that staple, and then subvert it by asking "but what if these bros were kind instead?"
It is so good, and you need to read it.

Wind Breaker has me on the edge of my seat, just about all the time! It's a manga that was written with care and great fight scenes. The humanity that these characters possess, the blind spots about themselves...
The character writing is great. I love how the layers of narrative are building up into a strong story. I can't wait to see what's next!
Sakura is such an interesting mess of a person, his evolution as a person is going well...Sou is also particularly interesting, such a mysterious young man. I can't wait until more Sou story is revealed over time.

Me pasa con windbreaker que me gusta el aspecto emocional de la vaina, pero no los personajes, ni la edición, ni lo exageradamente melodramático que es todo.
De hecho, solamente me gusta ver como los muchachitos en la trama abren sus corazones, pero pa ver eso toca aguantarse 2 capítulos de violencia y clichés.
De hecho, creo que solo me gusta Umemiya y lo que representa.
