3/3 The "spider body" comes with a lot of variations. This one is a paler brown with paler H-motif, and isn't so hairy, looking a bit more like a teddy bear than a spider!
Although nationally rare, they're extremely abundant in Purbeck, must be tens of thousands of them.

2/3 This was the first Early Spider-orchid of the year, with petals and sepals still rather curly, not yet straightened out.

It's that time of year when our local Early Spider-orchids (one of the first orchid species of the year) start to come out. These are on the Purbeck coast near Dancing Ledge.

Friends coming round for dinner this evening, so posting a bit early for #WildflowerHour
Not a flower yet, admittedly, but most botanical excitement this week was finding this Early Spider-orchid rosette at Durlston Country Park, first I've seen this year. There will be thousands of them in bloom in a few months. Nationally rare but locally abundant in #Purbeck, #Dorset, and very wonderful. A promise of spring.
