Should a museum of applied art and design collect an object that nobody will see in use?
Victoria & Albert has in its collection several lengths of KONE carbon-fibre lift (elevator) cable, branded UltraRope. It's clever technology designed to speed lift passengers up and down 72 stories of The Shard building in London and other tall structures.
But it's not decorative, so it it applied art?
UltraRope consists of a carbon fibre core with a high-grip coating. This product is so much lighter than a traditional cable, it can be longer and so serve more building floors without passengers having to switch to another lift, half way up.
