  1. A sailboat watercolor and oil pastel sketch; new podcast dropped this morning; DMSO

I began a sketch yesterday, but didn't finish it until today (Tuesday's are our busy day around here, picking up groceries and running errands). I'm fairly pleased with it, but always feel I could do better. I think for me, right now, it's getting the sizing correct. For instance, I think I got the line between the water and the sky right, and the size of the sailboat. But the white watercolor paint doesn't do anything on the page, so typically, for anything white I leave it alone and let the […]

  2. A watercolor and oil pastel fractal design

I played around with the watercolors yesterday, after working up a fractal type of design from a page out of an old calendar. I couldn't replicate the fractals, but I loved how the watercolors flowed over the oil pastels on the page! I may make more of this kind of art! Calendar fractal design (top); My "fractals in blue" oil pastel/watercolor art. --Sheila Murrey In the coming days, I'll be sketching more images out of my husband's 100+ framed paintings collection--so stayed tuned. I've […]

  3. Two new sketches using pencil, marker and oil pastels

I did two new sketches from out of my husband's 100+ framed paintings collection and thought you'd enjoy them. This is my butterfly sketch in progress, because I had no idea that I would finish it yesterday due to all the white dots (so much black to color in), and it did take some time: Butterfly artwork of Richard's on the left; my version of the butterfly sketch on paper on the right (in progress). Though I did make a little mistake on the top of the rose, and even laid awake last night […]

  4. Tiger sketch using pencil, marker and oil pastels

I looked through some of my husband's 100+ framed paintings to see if I thought I might attempt a sketch of a few more, recall the lions: This is a face on tiger. I love Richard's artwork. He always creates a mat for his art as well, so we just print and frame. Easy! He used to sell these for $100 each, but has taken his artwork down due to low sales and too many scam-like emails coming in to him. Tiger artwork of Richard's on top; my version of the tiger sketch on paper. I got a little […]

  5. The watercolors I use now

Thanks to Walmart extending me the offer to become a Recognized Reviewer, I have been searching their 1,000 items list for the last few days and thinking about all the things we need, or want, plus what we might give as holiday gifts, especially to the granddaughters. I'm beyond excited to know that because I've freely given Walmart hundreds (I think it's over 1,000 by now actually), mostly on food items we've bought from them in the two years we've lived in New Hampshire, that NOW, I will […]

  6. Child on tree swing sketch using pencil, marker and oil pastels

I felt inspired, since receiving my new watercolor kit (Thanks to Walmart! See my next article where I explain the program and show you the kit), that I got to sketching and painting right away yesterday afternoon! I decided to attempt another one of the sketches I've held onto for months (from Linda Lewis' blog). Let me know what you think of it: Linda Lewis' child on tree swing sketch on laptop and my version of child on tree swing sketch on paper --Sheila Murrey My child on tree swing […]

  7. Lady sketch using pencil, marker and oil pastels

As another "thank you" to my artist, blogger and "soul sister" pal, Linda Lewis... here's a lady she sketched back on April 28th, 2026: https://creativeartworksblog.com/2026/04/28/tuesday-4-28-2026/ And as Linda has suggested to me, when "you get to the point where the process becomes more like an escape from something on your to-do list, rather than an item on it. THAT’S when you’ll really smile." And I am smiling, Linda. This was FUN! Lady sketch, Linda's original on laptop screen; my […]

  8. Sketch of the lions using pencil, marker and oil pastels

I have completed a sketch of a male and female lion that my husband, retired graphics specialist, Richard Murrey drew and illustrated many years ago and a print of which, hangs in our living room. He used to display his art on a couple of websites, but now, has decided dealing with the random emails and follow through is too much for him. I'm simply thankful he continues to write a few songs and organize them for our radio shows! I'm making this more of an art day because I am still dealing […]

  9. Thai scene sketch with pencil and oil pastels

I just finished a sketch of a Thai scene (thanks and link to Linda Lewis), from a lovely sketch that Linda shared on Apr. 7th! That's how far behind I am on my sketching. That is on the list of several I've saved from Linda to help me learn and stay motivated. It was one of her first Thai scenes with all the wires! I don't know if I did it justice or not, but will share it anyway. This Thai street scene sketch is modeled from the one Linda did on Apr. 7th, 2026 and you can find it here on […]

  10. A pier sketch with pencil and oil pastels

My daughter did this sketch a month or so ago at the art studio where she works. I knew as soon as I saw her photos of the progression she took on it, I knew I wanted to sketch it. But with high prioritizing my mobility exercises (at various times throughout my day), prepping food and cooking then performing the subsequent clean-up, working on reformatting the paperback version of my book, doing interviews and Zoom calls to promote it, reading and working through about 6 books, reviewing and […]

  11. An example of our connections: a high school friend (retired nurse now artist) offers watercolor sketches

Fellow bloggers and long distance friends, Gray Summers (retired nurse, songwriter/musician, fan of all things vintage, and Johnny Depp) and Linda Lewis (watercolor sketch artist and weight loss inspiration to me) may LOVE this post! (Click their names to visit their blog sites.) My high school friend Teresa Damron has retired from her nursing career and been drawing and sketching, with her most recent being watercolor sketches! I'll share a couple of her exquisite animal sketches (yes, she […]

  12. The new podcast interview experience was GREAT!

I had such a grand time on Julia's Anchor Haven Debrief podcast! I met Julia via Gina Virginia Casella (see end of this article for more regarding Gina's Dragon Dreamers conference on June 13th). And I do hope some of you can join us all day on June 13th for that. Gina and everyone on the team, as well as us presenters have been working hard to ensure everyone will gain new insights and perspectives on a range of subjects, so I think it will be worth your time and $40 to watch/listen. I know […]

  13. When you begin to think that a climate change disaster on the other end of the country isn't important to you, realize that Hurricane Helene damaged a Baxter Medical manufacturing plant that supplies IV fluids and irrigation solutions to 60% of the United States, causing critical shortages to hospitals thousands of miles away.

  15. Excellent news! 5 #GreyWolves were just released back into the Colorado’s Rocky Mountains wilderness. 10 - 15 more wolves will be released into the area by mid-march 2024.

The wolves were originally captured in the state of Oregon, examined by a veterinarian, deemed healthy, then released back to their native land.

    I’m celebrating!

  18. Tomorrow!

Critical Mass Minneapolis is back! You can read about the mission at imgur.com/a/p00968a but the short of it is that we'll gather at the former Quarry encampment site on the far end of the home depot parking lot. We intend to bring attention to the dangerous precedent set by Minneapolis Public Works and MN DOT resources being used to sweep encampments while the streets in NE minneapolis continue to be wildly unsafe for pedestrians, handicapped folks, and bicyclists alike. just because we're rated among the best cities for *recreational* bicyclists doesn't mean the mission of Critical Mass is complete.

meet at the quarry around 4pm, rolling by 4:20. arrive sooner if you want to help skillshare how to cork intersections or learn about co-organizing the next ride!

Wonderful news! Increase of 237 porpoises in 5 years. Let’s hope the populations of the other species of #endangered #RiverPorpoises does the same.

"Incredible results like these for the Yangtze finless #porpoise remind us that there is still hope for the world's other five remaining species of river dolphins – all of which are threatened with #extinction."

  22. @the_real_hal @SecularJeffrey #Wolves aren’t just predators they’re #ApexPredators. They’re central to the functioning of #ecosystems, regulation of disease & the maintenance of #biodiversity. They help to maintain healthy populations of prey species by taking out the old, sick & injured. Wolves in fact are beneficial. They make everything around them stronger, healthier, more agile & alert. The Yellowstone is an excellent example of this.
