  2. Book Review: Richard III by William Shakespeare

    Author: William Shakespeare
Title: The Tragedy of Richard III
Publication Info: New York : Simon & Schuster Paperbacks, 2009, c1996.
    Summary/Review:

Reading Shakespeare in order has the advantages of being familiar with the Henry VI trilogy which forms the background of this drama.  It also becomes clear how much Shakespeare’s style and writing are improving.  I previously read Richard III in my college Shakespearean Tragedy class, even though it is technically classified as a history, it does demonstrate Shakespeare’s increasing skill as a tragedian.  It’s also fun because the protagonist is an evil, little shit.  Granted the historical accuracy is shaky as this was basically a propaganda piece or, “kissing up to Queen Elizabeth by valorizing her grandfather” as my college professor put it.  But, Richard is a realistic tyrant, and his conniving and self-serving ways are all to relevant to present-day tyrants.

  5. Book Review: Henry VI, Part 3 by William Shakespeare

    Author: William Shakespeare
    Title: Henry VI, Part 3
Publication Info: New York : Simon & Schuster Paperbacks, 2009.
    Summary/Review:

The concluding part of the Henry VI trilogy captures the most troubled times of the Wars of the Roses.  The Duke of York claims the throne as Edward IV.  Henry VI requests that he be able to remain monarch the remainder of his life and Edward agrees.  Problem solved, right?  No!  Because Queen Margaret and the would-be heir Prince Edward along with several families with grudges against the Yorkists go to war.

There are many battles and atrocities but Edward’s supporters hold the upper hand.  But when Edward marries Lady Grey at the same time that his supporter Warwick is trying to secure a marriage with the daughter of the King of France, Warwick is insulted and shifts allegiance to Margaret.  More bloody battles ensue and many of the primary characters are killed in horrible ways.  The play ends with Edward believing he finally has a firm hold on the throne, but his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester is plotting (to be continued in Richard III).

Of the the three plays this one is the most action-oriented with four battles on stage.  Despite the events depicted taking place over a dozen years and in numerous location, this also feels like the most focused plot.  Shakespeare appears to be developing his writing skills with several key monologues and dialogues.

  9. Two anonymous 17th Century ballads describing the purported evil deeds of Richard III, the murder of the Princes in the Tower, and the Battle of Bosworth Field, which was fought #onthisday in 1485.
A good example of Tudor propaganda.

A song of the Life and Death of King Richard the Third (to the tune of Who list to lead a soldier's life)
    and
The most cruel murther of Edward the fifth, and his brother Duke of York, in the Tower; by their Uncle Richard Duke of Gloucester (to the tune of Fortune my foe)

  10. @Jennifer_Pinkley @leighms @ChrisMayLA6 Sorry but I don’t agree. Charles is taking “donations “ & keeping offshore accounts. a billionaire at birth why is he using tax £ to pay for his everything? Which kings have you gotten rid of as required? It’s usually somebody who wants to be the next king who gets rid of them. Yet it’s average Britons who fought their endless wars. #WarsOfTheRoses ?

  11. I've been enjoying 'The Granddaughters of Edward III' by #KathrynWarner, thanks to a review copy from #NetGalley. Two queens, several scandals, descendants with competing claims leading to the #WarsOfTheRoses. Many history books focus on half the population; examining what we know of the women provides new perspective. 🧵 1/

#OnThisDate in 1486 Henry VII married Elizabeth of York, thereby putting paid to the #WarsoftheRoses.

  13. On the 4th January 1483, Francis Lovell was created Viscount Lovell, however, his estates including his home in Oxfordshire, and titles would be the subject of an attainder in 1487 following the Yorkist defeat at the Battle of Stoke Field. One of his other titles lost after the battle was Baron d'Ayncourt.

The d'Ayncourt barony would lay in abeyance until the 17th century when it was granted to Francis Leke. Charles Tennyson, the uncle of Alfred, Lord Tennyson would try unsuccessfully to get his hands on it in the 18th century.
