My collection of music largely stopped around 2014ish because streaming kinda took over.
I'm back to casually listening to it right now through #wacup software on my computer though. Here to tell you #Matchbox20 still slaps

Hey fedizens :FediverseSymbol:
Anybody know a decent, modern replacement for Tag&Rename?
It used to be our favourite tag editor, but development seemingly stopped back in 2018.
We're ideally looking for something that's:
- Cross-platform (at least Windows and Linux).
- Has a user-friendly UI.
It must:
- Have a dark mode option.
- Be compatible with modern tags, particularly lyrics ones, which we're apparently way out of date on 😅
- We think the newer Vorbis tag is
UNSYNCEDLYRICS, based on some downloaded FLAC files, versus the olderLYRICStag we're used to.
- We think the newer Vorbis tag is
For context, we primarily use WACUP on desktop or Poweramp on Android.
Not sure if it's a thing, but if there's some kind of new option for synced lyrics that's compatible with both of the above, that would be amazing!

It's been somewhat quiet from me but here's a quick look back at things for 2024, what I hope for 2025 & that there's a new #WACUP beta build 1.99.24.20678 now being tested🎄
A new preview will come out next month once some aspects are have been resolved.

#WACUP 1.99.22.20202 preview builds are now available.
A relatively small set of changes for this one & gets a bit closer to dropping one of the re-used plug-ins whilst allowing the x64 build to play MP3 & AAC internet radio streams 📻

Hey fedi audiophiles 👋 :FediverseSymbol: 🎧
Do you know any magical way to get the Year tag to save as and show as more than just YYYY?
Failing that, is there a viable workaround that you're aware of?
Our collection is all in FLAC, which we believe uses Vorbis comments.
The reason for asking is for the very few occasions where multiple albums are released by the same artist within the same year, but the album titles are not in alphabetical order.
We're looking for some method that will let us sort correctly by release year without breaking either of the music players we use (WACUP or PowerAmp).
Additional bonus points if anyone knows how to add an original release year tag, in the case of re-released albums.

CW: Further update on finding replacement for Winamp
Hey folks 👋
Previous threads here and here.
tl;dr - we're currently trialling WACUP (WinAmp Community Update Project) Preview v1.99.21.20088 x86, and we're very happy with it so far.
It has a few glitches with old Classic Pro skins, but in the meantime we're using a skin called Big Bento Modern - Windows 10 edition v1.2.3.
Our highly-neurospicy brain would like to be able to go back to Classic Pro Bento 1.15, but considering you can completely configure all the colours for it, we can live with the slightly different interface.

CW: Update to post about seeking alternative to Winamp on Windows 10; kind of a tired vent?
Hey folks 👋
Previous post is located here.
Today we've tried:
- AIMP - got really annoyed with its interface really quickly :FaceExhaling:
- Audacious - better experience than AIMP, but couldn't make it look and function like Winamp or load newer Winamp skins 😞
We tried to find a way to set up each like how we use Winamp, and couldn't get
Those exhausted us and made us rage quit trying new ones for the day 😅
We've still got to test:
Why is it so difficult to find another music player that lets you do layouts like this Winamp? 🥺
So far, WACUP is looking like the next one we'll try, as it looks to be basically Winamp with bug fixes.

#WACUP preview build 1.99.21.20088 is now available & I described it in the beta releases thread notes as "refinement rather than anything revolutionary" which sometimes is what a build needs to be.
As such this one has focused on a number of things that cropped up from the past few weeks of the prior build being out as the new preview build which overall that build seems to have been working generally ok.

#WACUP preview build 1.99.20.19994 is now available & manually updating to the build is required unless you're one of the lucky ones where the build crashes on you & the post-crash prompting is still being triggered.
As the new version prompt has been broken for all of the 2024 preview builds since April which only came to light around 2 weeks ago for which being annoyed with myself is still an understatement.

Oh, cool, the latest version of Ship of Thesus reimplementation of Winamp, WACUP, v1.99.16.19516, has Milkdrop, the classic 2000's overactive visualization plugin, finally working for me under WINE (v9.14) on Linux. :ac_joy:
A modernized Winamp with WINE overhead may not be the most practical way to play music, given it's eating 50% of a CPU core doing this, but it is one of the most aesthetic.
Seriously I just saw it overlay a Conway's Game of Life on top of flashing cubes for five seconds before I could do a screenshot. :ac_bewilderment:

#WACUP build 1.99.15.19320 went up last night as a quick fix for an ironic crash from a change meant to avoid crashes (sorry to all for that) & a memory leak.

#WACUP build 1.99.15.19312 is up & 3rd time lucky is the aim for this new preview build vs the main stability issue the builds have been having.

#WACUP build 1.99.13.19100 is now up as the new preview build & aims to resolve the main crash issue which has been plaguing the prior build along with a slew of around 60 additions, changes & more fixes based on feedback & other things determined from the crash reports received.
https://getwacup.com/preview/preview_1_99_13_19100.html has the changes made compared to the prior 18980 preview build.

It's been just over 3 years since a #WACUP preview build showed an update was available. https://getwacup.com/preview/
That's now happened with build 1.99.12.18980 available with a cumulative changelog of over 1701 entries compared to 2021's build 1.0.21.7236.
There's been many more changes in the interim-builds to the first full preview build to run without the need to re-use the #winamp 5.666 core exe (note: it still needs to re-use a few of the plug-ins & supporting dlls https://getwacup.com/files.html#winamp )
-
The most recent public version of #WACUP, the project to modernize #Winamp for oldheads who like flashy music players, advertises explicitly #WINE (the Windows compatibility layer for Linux) support and runs so much better than previous ones did under WINE. Milkdrop visualizations still don't work for me along with global hotkeys, but I'm hacking around the later with xdotool and it's already ridiculously aesthetic enough for me. :P
It's somehow also the most functional player on Linux for VGM chiptune tracker files that aren't Genesis or GSF Gameboy Advance rips...
You can check it out here if you're interested.
(There's also UI options that looks like Winamp 2.X either directly or with better DPI support, but I'm a 5.X weirdo. :P)

#WACUP beta build 1.9.20.17040 just went up as a newer "beta" preview build which should resolve the main crashing issues found with last week's new build.
https://getwacup.com/preview/preview_1_9_20_17040.html details just the changes made between build 1.9.19.16956 & this newer one.
There should now be a pause in new builds to let things settle out & try to get things on the list done before the more formal push for the preview build that's intended for around the end of October.

Summer’s up & so’s the “Beta” Preview Build
#WACUP beta build **1.9.19.16956** just went up with it also provided as a "beta" preview build before a more formal preview build is done next month (October 2023) to help resolve issues that haven't yet been caught as is likely to arise.
https://getwacup.com/blog/index.php/2023/09/23/summers-up-sos-the-beta-preview-build/ has some more info about things & links to the current cumulative inter-build changelog (almost 1300 lines of the stuff!).

@mondstern @inkican Obligatory plug for #WACUP, too - one of the original guys is doing a modernization of the original Winamp if you want to run it locally instead of in a browser. 🙂
