Monday dawns dreary with a 90% probability of dismal.

DW went to the show last night to hear #VASymphony play #orchestralmusic from the Harry Potter movies. Everybody knows John WIllams’ opening theme — those bells. But there is way more and 3 composers were credited. #music #liveshow #HarryPotter

Minion returned from West Side Story and feed me my evening entitlements. I’ll let his skate on this one.

#VASymphony made Leonard Bernstein proud with a hot fiery West Side Story Dance Suite. WOW, what a complex work. Musicians have multiple melodies going, complex percussion and bass groves, and sudden tempo and time signature changes. And always that insane click track at the back. A hard work to master and present but they did it with style and grace. Bravo Zulu

Porridge is on. DW forgot watch and to set a timer so brekkie could be stove top granola bars!

Friday night #music was a Chris Thile #livemusic concert accompanied by the #VASymphony opening with “Starburst” the “Scheherazade”. After the break Chris and the orchestra played what was billed as a “mandolin concerto “ but in reality, was a song cycle and talking blues mashup with VASymphony choir and orchestral accompaniment. Chris was flat out for a full hour in this unique world premiere. Then some Chris mandolin folk for encore.

Chris has several additional orchestras lined up.

Ahoy, y’all. Dismal Manor Gang #VASymphony played #Saturday #livemusic for Dismal Wizard. We stayed home while a young lass played the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto 🎶 for us. at 24, she was a touring artist soloing this complex fast work by ear. VASymphony played this complex hairy work with precision, polish, and passion.

Meanwhile, morning is dawning gray but is to clear and warm for an afternoon garden walk. #greyhounds

Today’s #music was Nebula by Paul Kim premiered by #VASymphony at its Sunday PB&J Concert for the young and young in heart. Our steel band also played in this concert that explored rhythm in symphonic orchestral music.

Nebula is definitely in the Ambient genre. The piece was composed for this concert to demonstrate that serious music need not have a rhytmn. Melody and harmony were there in this string-heavy piece. Only a couple of minutes but engaging.

Dvorak Violin Concerto and Samuel Taylor-Coleridge Violin Concerto new music receiving its premiere recording. If this were jazz, it would be #postbop Samuel arranged the Dvorak in addition to his own work. Eric Jacobson led the orchestra with style. Oh, and Gil Shazam has a groove-face! Rare to see a classical player grooving! But he did. Sadly no video. But you’ll be able to hear it on a coming new music day. #LiveMusic #VASymphony
