@krono @illogical_me @neil Depends on the brokenness level of the device. Sometimes a lesser cable can yield “better” results in the context of a particular use-case.
Thunderbolt compliance is no panacea. Neither is USB4 compatibility.
The same cable can do 10 or 20 Gbit/s over USB, depending on OS and device combination but 40Gbit/s over Thunderbolt.
The complexity is multi-dimensional.

Investigating why USB-version connections differ with multiple full-featured, and tested, USB Type-C↔︎C cables.
Cable A: USB-IF *certified*, passive Thunderbolt 3/4, USB4 Gen 3, 40GiBit/s
- Actual connection: USB 3.2 Gen2 SuperSpeed+, aka USB 10GiBit/s. Yes, renamed *again*.
- R: 1000MiB/s
- W: 700MiB/sCable B: not-certified, same specs as A
- Actual connection: USB 4 Gen 3
- R: 5.2GiB/s
- W: 4.8GiB/s -

Du möchtest in #Hamburg im Bus ein Gerät aufladen? Ich habe die #USB Ports durchgetestet um herauszufinden welche Schnellladeprotokolle unterstützt werden. Das Ergebnis war erwartungsgemäß und ist weitreichend mit Geräten kompatibel.
- Bis zu 7.5W via USB Battery Charging Specification 1.2. (5V, 1.5A)
- Bis zu 10W via Apple Charging Signaling. (5V, 2.1A)Die Ports sind in Braille mit „USB“ beschriftet.
Es gibt neben manchen Sitzen auch Runde Ladestationen mit gleicher Funktion.

das Werkl ladet manchmal nicht, erst wenn man den USB-C Stecker einmal um 180° dreht, gehts wieder 🤷♂️. Nach etwas mehr Spaß am Gerät denke ich mir: "Hmm, ob jetzt mit dem Linux wohl mein USB-C Hub endlich richtig erkannt wird?" und schließe ihn an, worauf ich ein leises "Plopp" höre und das Chromebook macht nix mehr. #USBwtf

Habe den wertvollen Tipp bekommen, daß eine Person (p0k?)auf der #GPN22 einige Platinen für USB Kabeltester/fancy Durchgangsprüfer dabei hat.

Für meinen Talk auf der #GPN22 habe ich dieses fragwürdige Ding konstruiert und gedruckt. Das sollte beim Live-Demo helfen das Bild zu stabilisieren wenn ich kurz einen USB Type-C Tester demonstriere.
Jetzt muss ich nur nochmal üben damit sich das zeitlich auch wirklich ausgeht. :-)

Testing the new #ÖBB #Nightjet #USB charging ports. They are used in any type of sleeper cabin, even the mini “coffin” cabins which are actually pretty comfortable.
Facts:
- Port Type A
- USB Battery Charging specification 1.2
- 2.5W minimum up to 7.5Watts
- Should charge any Phone/PowerBank directly
- *May* keep Type-C laptops from draining their battery
- Works with USB A to Type-C cables as well as A to any B plug.
- No USB Power Delivery support
- no data or USB host capability -
