The Register: Raspberry Pi flashes new branded USB drives that promise speedy performance. “The drive comes in 128 GB ($30 list price) or 256 GB capacity ($55) and plugs into any USB Type-A port, though it works best when attached to one that operates at USB 3 (aka USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 1) speeds of up to 5 Gbps.”

9 Ways To Use Old #USBDrives (Other Than #Storage)

‹sigh› USB drives simply don't last, do they? It's why I don't buy them bigger than 64 GB. They last two or three years, then die.¹ And it looks like the one I use for first-level backup (NAS is second, online third) and to ferry torrented files to my streaming box is failing, so I'm backing it up and opening the replacement.
[1] It's not just because I buy cheap drives, either. I've used SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston, Verbatim, PNY, more. #usbdrives

MakeUseOf: This free and open-source tool made my USB drives way more useful. “I went tool hunting and found Ventoy. This open-source app installs once, and then you can add as many disk images (ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files) as you want to the drive without needing to reformat. You can also include all your portable diagnostic apps and continue to use the USB as a storage device.”

How-To Geek: 6 USB Drive Uses You’re Missing Out On. “Most of us use USB drives for temporary file storage, but they can do much more. You can boot an operating system, store and encrypt passwords, automate critical data backups, and more. If you have a spare USB drive that you only use for storage, here are some other ways to make the most of it.”

📢🔌🥇 Oh sure, let's funnel USB drives into North Korea like it's the hottest new TikTok challenge! Because nothing says 'freedom' quite like a horde of malfunctioning thumb drives gathering dust in a Manhattan office. Next up: solving world peace with a box of stale cookies! 🍪🌍✨

One of my USB drives died on me just now, it set itself in a "read only" mode. What graceful death, at least the data that's on them can be read. 😥
I have a hunch newer USB drives are not made as well as older ones, I have really old ones that works still. But the newer ones only lasted for a couple of mounts before suddenly killing themselves. -

6 Things You Won't Believe Still Run #WindowsXP
By Sydney Butler
Published Jul 20, 2024"Industrial control systems operate and monitor large systems like #NuclearPower plants, automated production lines, #WaterPurification plants, and so on. Windows XP might still be used in some of these large systems for a few reasons. For one, many of these systems can't be taken offline for long, since they provide critical services or goods. There may also be a massive loss of income if they go offline to be updated. Especially given how there are likely to be bugs in new software and operating systems. It might also be necessary to replace perfectly working hardware to work with new software.
"Upgrade plans for major industrial systems can take years to plan and execute, and if everything is working just fine, there's little incentive to do it. Many of these systems aren't even connected to outside networks.
"This is why it was necessary to sneak #USBDrives into facilities to infect them with #malware like Stuxnet. This is a practice known as '#AirGapping' and if your system doesn't need to be online, it shouldn be seen as a basic security measure."

#Cybersecurity #China #USBDrives #Malware: "At the mWise security conference today, researchers from cybersecurity firm Mandiant revealed that a China-linked hacker group they’re calling UNC53 has managed to hack at least 29 organizations around the world since the beginning of last year using the old-school approach of tricking their staff into plugging malware-infected USB drives into computers on their networks. While those victims span the United States, Europe, and Asia, Mandiant says many of the infections appear to originate from multinational organizations’ Africa-based operations, in countries including Egypt, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, and Madagascar. In some cases, the malware—in fact, several variants of a more than decade-old strain known as Sogu—appears to have traveled via USB stick from shared computers in print shops and internet cafés, indiscriminately infecting computers in a widespread data dragnet."

The almost overnight removal of #DVD and #bluray disk drives from #computers is a sign that we are being lead down a very cruel path.
Disks have typically been a way to share knowledge horizontally. When that is removed and people are herded to use terribly unethical #streamingServices and trashy cloudFlare sites for information, it becomes quite clear that dark times are here.
USB drives are not sharable #technology.
