🪐 Studies of the star IRS 3, located near the black hole Sgr A* at the centre of our galaxy, suggest that the star is emitting large quantities of gas and dust, thereby forming an exceptionally large envelope in which 💦 water molecules have been detected.
🔭 The study was carried out by a team of astronomers led by PD Dr Florian Peißker from the University of Cologne’s Institute for Astrophysics.

For the first time, a research team led by Professor Dr Bart Thomma has succeeded in gaining insights into the genetic basis of the ‘defoliation’ caused by the pathogenic fungus Verticillium dahliae. The fungus infects crops such as olive trees, cotton plants and tomatoes.
The cause of the fungus’s aggressiveness is a protein that entered the fungus via a ‘starship’.

📣 On Saturday, 4 July 2026, scientists will share fascinating insights into their research. As part of the ‘Soapbox Science’ initiative, nine female and non-binary researchers from the Universities of Cologne and Düsseldorf will give talks near Cologne’s Neumarkt on topics ranging from biology and medicine to quantum physics, presented in a way that is accessible to a general audience.
