really like how the tree in the foreground sets the darkest level and the succession of dark and light, really rainy and wet. Folks are still out in the boats, we keep going

Feeling like you are in new territory? Gift yourself the space and a little time to take in the moment. Not what you feel it asks of you, just what it is. Smile or laugh at the absurdity, magic, wonder of it all.

Eigentlich egal! Es ist alles eine Augenweide!

  26. Experience the tranquil beauty of Hiroshige's "Mountain and River on the Kiso Road," where serene snow-covered landscapes invite reflection. How does this artwork transport you to a winter wonderland?

  27. "No. 57, Grounds of Kameido Tenjin Shrine," Hiroshige, 1858.

I've featured Hiroshige (1797-1858) before, so I won't go into much detail about him. This was part of his "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," which was actually 119 prints, but it seems churlish to rant about false advertising.

The Kameido Tenjin shrine was built in honor of Sugawara no Michizane, a prominent politician and scholar. Serving multiple emperors, he was betrayed by a colleague, lost his position, and died, after which a series of natural disasters struck Japan. Some felt they were his revenge for betrayal, so the shrine was built to appease his spirit. Built in 1646 in the heart of the city, it was moved to the outskirts after a disastrous fire in Edo. It was later destroyed by bombers in WWII but rebuilt in concrete, where it remains today. Reportedly students still go there to pray to pass their exams!

And dig the wisteria! It's blossoming time for Asian wisteria.

  30. "Genji Viewing Snow from a Balcony," Toyohara Kunichika, 1867.

Kunichika (1835-1900) was a noted artist of woodblock prints, mostly of kabuki actors and scenes from kabuki plays, but also of beautiful women and historic scenes. He flourished during the Edo era and the Meiji era, in the days when Japan was on the brink of massive cultural upheaval.

This print depicts a scene from the novel The Tale of Genji, about the life and loves of Prince Genji. Here he is, enjoying tea on his balcony. This may have been part of a triptych, with attendants on either side.

  31. "Cat with a Lantern," Kobayashi Kiyochika, 1877-81.

    I'm doing another theme week!

Kiyochika was a fabulous woodblock artist during the Meiji period, when Japan was open to the West and rapidly modernizing. His work is considered the last great ukiyo-e art, which I was always fond of.

I love the detail of the jingle bell on the cat's collar, and the captured moment of playfulness.

  34. "Gion Shrine in Snow," Hiroshige, 1834.

Part of a series called "Famous Views of Kyoto."

It's amusing...I've talked to folks about our seemingly sharedl appreciation for Japanese culture only in almost every case their appreciation is kaiju, anime, and manga, and my appreciation is Ukiyo-e, Kurosawa, and Lafcadio Hearn...

We got no snow this year, so this is in hopes of some next winter.
