  7. The Servant Fudesuke (Shimobe Fudesuke), from the series One Hundred Ghost Stories from China and Japan (Wakan hyaku monogatari), Tsukioka Yoshitoshi 1865

I have a couple of art books collecting works by Yoshitoshi, so excellent. Expression, body language, clarity. I would say that there's a sort of just-right-ness about this art form that you don't see everywhere, maybe because they had to make decisions based on what could be carved in wood blocks? I think that must be part of it 🤔

I like the fella's reaction, he isn't terrified, in fact he's leaning in to get a good look 😁 👻

really like how the tree in the foreground sets the darkest level and the succession of dark and light, really rainy and wet. Folks are still out in the boats, we keep going

  21. Gongsun Sheng making a magical gesture, Utagawa Kuniyoshi

I love the energy in his expression. It's interesting to me because these old Ukiyo-E prints aren't meant to be realistic, or they didn't hold realism up as a necessary quality, and yet there is enough there that it feels really consistent. In some of them the design is almost abstract and it takes me a while to figure out what is meant to be happening. In this one there is so much billowing fabric that I had no idea what his feet were doing at first, I think I have it now.

Look at that face. He's hunched up and squirming, so powerful are the forces in play 😁
