  1. CW: User-activated antitrust law

In light of attacks on #generalComputing, our mind goes to a phrase the bitcoin community coined in 2016/17.

The term "#UserActivatedSoftFork", or #UASF, was small bitcoin node operators resisting the bigs' attempt to have large blockSizes which would compromise #security of #Bitcoin.

The #bigTechBlocker is similar. Its a '#UserActivatedAntitrustLaw' that prevents the decent into #technoFeudalism. And hyper-#massSurveillance.

  2. So that's a user activated soft-fork #UASF. The users pushing the miners into activating a soft-fork.

After the controversy around BIP119, another #bitcoin developer has now proposed User Resisted Soft fork, which is the same thing backwards.

  3. Users got together and staged a mutiny called #UASF, a popular movement that said; we're going to start running on our own #bitcoin nodes, rules that says, if miners have not activated this, any blocks that votes no, we're not going to propagate them. We're going to embargo them.

  4. Back when #SegWit was happening, you may have heard of User Activated Soft Fork, #UASF. At that time, miners were not activating SegWit even though there were overwhelming support by all the other constituencies of consensus to activate SegWit, miners were not activating it.

  5. 2017 a été l'année de résolution du débat sur la scalabilité de #Bitcoin marquée par l’influence du User Activated Soft Fork #UASF et l'activation de #SegWit 🔗 journalducoin.com/analyses/gue

  6. In 2017, miners attempted to assert control over the #Bitcoin protocol, and failed thanks to #BIP148 / #UASF.

Later, exchanges attempted to assert control over the protocol, and failed again (#NO2X).

In 2021, developers attempted to assert control over the protocol by reverting to BIP9, and reintroducing and enforcing the miner veto, after the community came to consensus on BIP8.

It's not entirely clear if that failed or succeeded. But it should receive the same reaction: complete resistance.

  7. #Bitcoin #Taproot activation meeting summary:

    - MASF using BIP 8 for the first year (#UASF or not still controversial)
    - BIP8 PRs 1020 & 1021 merged

Probably 2 more meetings (next being code review) to go.

  8. Now that #Bitcoin has got the block subsidy reduction #UASF out of the way (another success!), should we take another look at a block size limit reduction UASF? 🤔
