  1. It's not a "the kids don't read" moral panic: it's a crisis of critical thinking.

  2. "Those are some appalling approval ratings, reflecting the massive swing in popularity the tech industry has experienced over the last decade, driven by concerns around data privacy, the purposeful decay of once-useful platforms, and the erosion of democracy."

  3. The United States president has become the world’s biggest bully, threatening any country that doesn’t do as he demands with tariffs, and US tech companies are taking full advantage by flexing their muscle and trying to avoid effective regulation around the world. The drawbacks of our dependence on US tech companies have become more obvious with every passing year, but now there can hardly be any denying that where we can pry ourselves away from them, we should make the effort to do so.

  8. “Silicon Valley oligarchs are really vulnerable right now. People don’t like them. People are starting to rise up against data centres and this vision of an AI apocalypse that kills all the jobs and potentially kills all of humanity. Into that could step a politician to take advantage of that trend and come up with a message that speaks to the concerns of people and against the dark fantasies of the oligarchs.”

  12. Yanis Varoufakis in "Escaping AI slavery" discusses how big tech affects economy, democracy, technofeudalism, us developing a neuro-dependence, and other, and what we can collectively do to change the course. I highly recommend it!

My takeaways so far, on first listen/watch.

*We are in a critical emergency for democracy and people power.

*We need more platforms such as Hylo, wikipedia and the fediverse.

*We need to maintain & develop solidarity, unity.

*Each of us needs to recognise our own value, strengths, courage and awareness.

  27. #migrants are leaving a bad situation in hope of a better one.

As we post cat photos and talk about the ethics of #ai , there are people risking their lives to have better lives. And mostly we tell them “NO.”

Their situations are defined by power and the cliques that sequester it. Just like the creep of #capitalism , AI, #fascism , #technofeudalism near you, now.

It’s very likely that someone not too many generations back from you risked their life so you could live, too.

At the moment, I really do not have the bandwidth to draft a meaningful summary of my argument, sorry about that. However, I will suggest few papers/articles/posts on the topic that cover all the points I had in mind, and many more.

    1. Evgeny Morozov's "Critique of Technofeudal Reason" is probably the most well-known and the most comprehensive critique of the entire suite of theories arguing that today's tech companies have taken us back to feudalism. It appeared in April 2022, more than two years before the June 2024 publication of Varoufakis's book. However, Varoufakis had been making arguments along those lines for quite some time, and Morozov's critique covers them.

    2. Nicholas Gane's August 2024 paper, "Capitalism is capitalism, not technofeudalism", makes several interesting points.

    3. Jinqi Yan's December 2024 paper, "Techno-Feudalism as Primitive Accumulation: A Marxist Perspective on Digital Capitalism", is worth looking at.

    4. Benjamin Selwyn's December 2025 letter to The Guardian is a summary rebuttal of Varoufakis's thesis.

Hope these are helpful. If you feel like, we can discuss at a later date, after you have read them.

  35. @randahl I’m glad Elon exists: he’s showing the world that to make inordinate amounts of money and become one of the most powerful oligarchs in the world, you don’t need even an ounce of intelligence, you just need to be a sociopath eager to exploit even the most vulnerable.
He also makes clear that this system is a failure if it rewards these kind of individuals, with no correction mechanism in place. He’s a techno-wanker cyber-douche POS.
