So THAT is what the AI industry is using to explain its future to the public and policymakers? What a letdown.

Wenn sie auf dem „Torment Nexus“ bestehen oder: Dein Auto sollte dich nicht ins Gefängnis fahren

Vor ein paar Wochen hat ein selbstfahrendes Taxi der Marke Waymo in San Mateo, Kalifornien, zwei Kinder in die Hände der Polizei gebracht. Die Maschine stellte fest, dass ihre beiden 15-jährigen Fahrgäste Alkohol tranken und mit Spielzeugwaffen herumschossen, also alarmierte sie die Polizei, fuhr von selbst auf einen Parkplatz und schaltete sich aus. Die Kinder wurden daraufhin von den bewaffneten Männern (und möglicherweise Frauen) festgenommen, die gnädigerweise beschlossen, die Teenager nicht hinter Gitter zu stecken, sondern sie ihren Eltern zurückzugeben. Diesmal.

Fast jeder Artikel, den ich zu diesem Thema gelesen habe, will unbedingt betonen, dass die Kinder nicht im Auto eingesperrt waren, dass sie frei waren, zu gehen. Dass es den beiden Fünfzehnjährigen freistand, von einem beliebigen Parkplatz aus zu gehen, Gott weiß, wie weit von zu Hause entfernt. Als ob das alles in Ordnung machen würde.

Und ich habe viele Artikel über den Vorfall gelesen, weil mich mindestens ein Dutzend Leute in den Beiträgen getaggt oder mir Nachrichten dazu geschickt haben. Denn 2015 veröffentlichte Vice eine Kurzgeschichte von mir namens One Star, in der es um einen nicht-binären Graffitikünstler geht, der in einem selbstfahrenden Taxi gefangen ist, das beschließt, ihn ins Gefängnis zu fahren. Es ist eine kurze Lektüre, kaum länger als mein durchschnittlicher Newsletter.

Ich kam mir damals, als ich sie schrieb, richtig clever vor. Die Idee dazu kam mir, als ich mit ein paar Freunden in dem Van, in dem ich früher gewohnt hatte und den ich „Leviathan“ getauft hatte, quer durch das Land reiste. Weil er gigantisch war und die Zivilisation verkörperte.

Selbstfahrende Autos befanden sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt gerade mal in der Proof-of-Concept-Phase, aber ich erklärte, dass ich es toll fände, wenn „Leviathan“ von selbst fahren könnte – wenn ich einfach hinten in meinem eigenen Bett schlafen könnte, während mein Van mich dorthin bringt, wo ich hinwollte.

„Wenn sie selbstfahrende Autos erfinden, werden sie die Leute einfach ins Gefängnis fahren. Das weißt du doch, oder?“, sagte mein Freund zu mir.

Ich hatte keine Antwort für ihn, denn er hatte recht. Es gab nie eine Chance, dass eine Strafgesellschaft wie die USA selbstfahrende Autos als etwas anderes entwickeln würde als eine Erweiterung der sozialen Kontrolle und der Strafjustiz.
