  1. I'm very happy to see that #eveOnline devs are willing to make large changes to the game if neccessary.

  3. CW: edtech rant

EVE Online rolling in a chatbot to answer rookie questions with data gleaned from rookie channel chat history feels wrong in a fundamental way that looks superficially like gatekeeping, but really cuts into why Silicon Valley tech in education has been a complete disaster.

Some things are just inescapably difficult, and that's fine. Some things take time to learn, and that's fine. It's not some failure of democratization for things to have steep learning curves. For all of its difficulty, EVE Online did not lack in documentation.

How bad do I want a thing? One of my math profs in uni confessed she was no prodigy. Truthfully, she was on the verge of flunking out, and after a discussion with her own prof, had to accept that she had to study twice as long to internalize the concepts.

How bad did *she* want to learn math?

I'm preaching to the choir on hating generative models and LLMs, but this push-button-get-answer shit robs people of any chance of internalization. "Learning" is reduced to the equivalent of copy-pasting code from stack overflow or something, which can deliver metrics but does not reflect learning.

I've spent my life sitting in front of a horrifying yet sad parade that started out promising, with lots of interesting ideas: what if we got kids to engage with education by making everything a game? What if we did the same for adults? What if you had a personal sometimes-wrong tutor 24/7/365?

Now most every major web site has a corner chatbot. Sometimes the info is right there; increasingly, it's not. The online world is becoming opaque. Conveniently, only massive corporations can afford the bill and the data centres providing those bots. Crawlers bulldoze small sites with traffic.

Techbros hate humanity to such a degree that they're willing to burn it all down to be seen as paper geniuses. Ed tech is anti-learning and human hostile. The strongest association reinforced by these techniques is there being a parental software figure doling out the treats. That's not independence. That's not innovation. That's not creativity. That's being a rat in a box with a lever that dispenses food pellets.

Please Read The Fucking Manual, even if it takes you two, three, or four times as long.

  5. It’s only my third day in Iceland and I’m already greeted by my name in the coffee shop. #opSuccess #tweetfleet #tootfleet #EVEOnline #fanfest

  6. My little trans-positive messages may get shot up and put into reinforcement, but my enemy underestimates my ability to set aside two minutes each day to redeploy it.

  8. I made it a routine in EVE to drop some named depots outside a station, named "Trans rights are human rights". I got hate mail and an official warning from CCP for "Offensive language", but I also got messages of thanks. Logging in after a hiatus, I see someone has continued my work <3

  10. Oh goddamnit. CCP decided to make an EVE spinoff game called EVE Frontier... and it's all blockchain bullshit. Literally nobody asked for this! We want updates that revitalize EVE itself, not this crypto nightmare crap! What the actual fuck are they thinking?!?

    CCPLEASE.

  16. Things are getting interesting again in Rens

After a long stretch of calm, the transphobes are back attacking our depots, and now they've added one of their own.

My Kissinger depot is untouched. Curious.

  20. Just trying this out: Anyone in Reykjavík for fanfest yet?

  21. @grs Some have suggested #tootfleet. That said #EveOnline is pretty much where it's at.
    Welcome to fediverse.

    Welcome to fediverse.

  23. @macgybo As far as I can tell, the community here is not really organized yet.
Most peeps seem to stick to the former #birdsite.
    Maybe introduce #tootfleet?
Even #eveonline has very few hits as far as I can tell in my little bubble.

  24. I may have started some shit in Rens.

The gremlin in me is proud of the fight I've started.

The Leftist in me is proud that other people stepped up to drop depots while I played GTFO instead.

The antifascist in me is laughing my tail off at the "RIP Bud Light" depot.

  25. Anyone here who plays #eveonline?

What's the Mastodon hashtag? (For the bird site, was #tweetfleet) #tootfleet, perhaps?

  27. Hey #eveonline nerds, should we establish the hashtag #tootfleet as #tweetfleet fediverse counterpart? #eve
