  1. For your information, currently I am in UTC+08:00 or MSK+5. Later I will move to UTC+07:00 or MSK+4. It is the most populous time zone in the world, mainly due to China's large population and using only one time zone. In Indonesia it is called as Central Indonesian Time or WITA. MSK, if you don't know, a short for Moscow Time.

  4. @wikitree If you really want the whole world to take notice, please add a GMT/#UTC #time so that most of us can work out when it is in our #timezone.

  9. Timezone rage finally got the best of me.

Coordinating meetings across time zones isn't something my brain is great at. A million sites already do this, but most are ugly, ad-ridden, or want you to sign up.

    So I built *timething*:

    • No ads, no accounts, no tracking
    • Per-zone working hours
    • Shareable links — generate, send, done
    • Beautiful landscape printouts (with a "valid until" warning, because DST sucks)
    • Mobile-friendly, because I don't only get confused about time at my desk

    >> timething.app

Hope it makes you a little less angry about timezones.

  14. Perl is not my favourite language, but I admit that its #regex syntax did a tonne of good for #programming.

We need a similar boost to the #bit twiddling syntax. I like the sensibility of C and Erlang bit-manipulation syntax.

Also, we geeks need to agree on how we clean up that politically induced mess that is the #timezone.

  15. Here's an odd one. In #Gnome if I have automatic #timezone detection on, it puts me in "Busingen, Germany", which is probably the closest geographically within Germany to me. The timezone there is CEST, but something in #Ubuntu or Gnome is insisting it's UTC, making the clock weird.

However the output of `date` is correct, and if I manually search for Busingen in the settings list, it shows that it's currently UTC+2 but selecting it means the clock still shows wrong. If I instead manually select Berlin, everything is right.

What happens to the Gnome clock (at the top of the screen, the clocks app seems to do it itself) for you if you manually select Busingen through the settings?

  22. Incidentally, did you know the US is the only country (sovereign state) in the world to not have a majority of its population living in a single time zone? Eastern Time covers ~46% of the population, during DST when it advances to the offset used by Puerto Rico, that's still only ~47%

  26. How do passengers avoid flight time confusion when a timezone in a place changes? For e.g. when timezone changes from EDT to EST, 1:30 a.m. occurs two times on November 2. How does one know which 1:30 a.m. the flight actually departs?
    Anyone experienced it before?

  28. Mình vừa tạo công cụ lên lịch họp không cần đăng nhập, giúp tìm thời gian chung cho các múi giờ. Không cần tài khoản, chỉ chọn thành phố, xuất lịch. Muốn biết công cụ hiện có (World Time Buddy, Google Calendar) còn thiếu gì, “login‑free” có thực sự hữu ích?
