  1. “How would your father feel if he never sees you again?”

  2. Despite plans to make a sequel that would use the second half of the book, “The Neverending Story 2” was mired in legal, funding and production troubles that would last the rest of the 1980s. All of the child actors had to be recast due to aging and the adults were recast due to them having long since moved on from the production- with the exception of Thomas Hill, who plays Koreander the bookkeeper in all 3 films.

  3. I considered showing this in December since it’s technically a holiday film but then thought “No. Let’s watch these films the way god intended: on a shady r*ssian streaming site, week by week, despite diminishing quality”

  4. If Bastian and his dad look different that’s because Bastian is now played by the dearly missed Jonathan Brandis instead of Barret Oliver and his dad changed actors from to Gerald McRaney to John Wesley Shipp

  5. I really don't want to blame the child actors for Bastian or Atreyu. They're doing an adequate job, the the film is never letting them off the damn hook. Meanwhile, the actress for Xayide is masticating the scenery with equally bland and stereotyped material, letting all the other actors go hungry.

Thankfully, Nimbly, the bird creature, brought his own lunch. His performance as a henchmen continues to be the only enjoyable thing in this film. Despite the heavy makeup, his performance is both convincing and emotive. He's practically dragging this film to the finish line.

  6. Unfortunately, the film is worse than that. The writing isn't just lifeless, it's telegraphed.

The antagonist's plan is to force Bastian to make wishes using the Auryn. Each wish results in a memory lost, until...profit, I guess. We already know what the grand plan is, but we're given no conflict that adds to the drama of the if Bastian wishes or not. There's no tension. No sense of risk with each wish.

I find myself thinking, "What is Bastian *knew* about effect on his memories with wishes?" That would make it so the plot would need to force him into circumstances in which only a wish could get him out. The film just doesn't go to that level of effort.

  7. There's an element of charm that's wholly missing from this film right out of the gate. In the first film, we get extended periods in the "real world" as well as in Fantasia which help establish the mood of each. This allowed the audience to get a sense of conflict for each.

Clever cinematography and narrative techniques were then employed to blur those lines at key points in the story.

There's...none of that here. The film feels lifeless. Shots are even reused from the original film to give a sense of epicness, but there's no music or feeling behind it.

  8. There's a part of this film which doesn't quite work because Bastian is now older. Instead of a grade schooler, he's almost a teen at this point. As such, it feels almost more unconvincing. It helps little that he's played by a different actor.

And only now did I finally look it up and find it's Johnathan Brandis. The same from SeaQuest DSV. He was, unfortunately, never that convincing of an actor; in either this or in SeaQuest (Universe, why don't I have a copy of that!?).

I'll spare you the details of his unfortunate death. You can look it up yourself if you want.

  9. The funny thing about me and this movie is, I remember the *commercials* more than actual movie. They were constant when this was released.

And then when we finally were able to rent the movie on tape...I didn't remember a damn thing about it afterward.

    Wench's first forgettable film? Perhaps.
