Story Pile: The Mighty Nein
It is pretty remarkable to me as a nearly lifelong Dungeons & Dragons player – I started when I was around nineteen or so – that this great game I love dearly has actually turned into a somewhat mainstream interest. Particularly, not just the game itself, but people playing the game, resulting in a type of Dungeons & Dragons that isn’t even like Dungeons & Dragons any more.
One of the successes in this space is the work of Critical Role, which ran for multiple seasons and grew a huge fanbase and even eventually resulted in an animated TV series, The Legend of Vox Machina. The Legend of Vox Machina is a real tour de force showing off these actors’ ability and range to deliver on a so-so story focused on a gaggle of Adult Animation Character Archetypes that range from ‘kinda underdeveloped’ to ‘actively sucks,’ with a special hat-tip to the two women who really weren’t allowed to do enough because of scheduling conflicts in the story and the character being sidelined by the community. I don’t think Legend of Vox Machina is a show that does much to recommend itself, but it does do a fantastic job of presenting you with a platform to get to know the characters in the story so you can decide if you want to watch the long-form, less-polished version of the story with the less-well-written version of the characters.
That’s right, Scanlon can be worse.
Nonetheless, success breeds success, and one of the later campaigns from the same players got an animated series, which was this time, spending Amazon Prime money. The result is Mighty Nein, a series that I liked a great deal and want to talk about, especially in the context of doing things I like in an interesting way.
Spoiler Warning, I’m going to talk about things in the Mighty Nein series. I haven’t watched the campaign but I understand some things are different, and I’m going to mention what I know of those things.

The Mighty Nein S01 (2025)
Creo que la mejor forma de describir esta serie es en comparación con Vox Machina. Donde VM es una serie de fantasía con arquetipos de fantasía clásicos, aquí nos encontramos con unas aventuras más urbanas, con una trama política como hilo conductor. Este conflicto ideológico da más protagonismo a los enemigos, que no salen sólo para las peleas sino que tienen su trama B. La magia también evoluciona, acentuando los componentes y el estudio de la magia como si fuera una ciencia. Y los protagonistas también han dejado de ser arquetipos clásicos y tienen más facetas.
En general esta serie parece un poco como la evolución de fantasía medieval a fantasía renacentista. No será a gusto de todos pero a mí me ha parecido un buen giro al género.

I love Dungeons and Dragons, and I love LGBT D&D content, so I was quite pleased to learn that the second Critical Roll campaign, The Mighty Nein, had been adapted into an animated series of the same name, because that original tabletop playthrough was quite queer.

As someone who's played Pathfinder 2e and D&D 5e and likes #TTRPGs but never watched #CriticalRole
I dropped the #TheMightyNein after one awful episode. They introduce three groups of characters in relatively quick succession and somehow manage to make each less interesting than the last.
The animation is dope and I like the Voltron-esque art style but jeeeeeez the writing was awful. By the end of it I was rooting against most of the characters I'd seen.
Get that bullshit off my screen.

Anyone watching "The Mighty Nein"? It features a lot of spoken German on the original English audio track. And it's quite a bit weird if you have a high level on German listening comprehension.
The voice actor that's dropping a lot of German lines has such a thick American accent you would think he's a German soldier in an American war movie.
Since the language is called something other in the series it might be fine lore wise, but it's still weird. 1/2

Really want to watch The Mighty Nein, so I’m stuck with Amazon and its ads. And OH does it have ads.
What surprising is how bad it all is. Such a large company providing such a messy experience.
Sometimes triggers double ad breaks. The “go ad free” button sometimes covers the “buy on Amazon” QR code (why they use QR codes is a whole ?? Unto itself)
