  1. The search for a favoured Finnish FFS swear has been quite a ride, but in the second poll of 25 options this one got the most votes with a mighty 19%.

The thread did uncover yet another set of possibilities, so there may be a second edition at some point, but there was a chance the project could stall permanently on Finnish unless I did one based on feedback to date 😆

    Thanks again to all contributing.

  3. CW: The FFS Project: Poll for native / fluent Québécois French speakers about a rude phrase

I'm collecting phrases that are used in the same manner as an exasperated "for fuck's sake" in English - imagine shouting in angry frustration at a news headline - what would you shout?

If there are many things you would shout, tell me your favourite!

A few have already been suggested & are in a poll below, but feel free to suggest others (if 'something else' wins, I will pester you with a second poll!)

If this has landed in your timeline & you don't know what I'm talking about, there is some info about the project here

  7. CW: The FFS Project: Poll for native / fluent Finnish speakers about a rude phrase

Dear Finland, you are (and I mean this in the best possible way) fucking amazing.

I originally posted 2 possible sweary phrases. 27 people voted but I got so many alternatives in the reply my list of possibles went up to 25.*

I posted all 25 and have currently lost count of the new alternatives in the comments.

I will, obviously make the 'winning' entry from this poll, but my current view is that I am going to have to come back to this. Finnish is going to need some extra entries in the collection.

    * 27 people. 25 different swears. The only logical conclusion is that if I managed to reach everyone, based on current population, I would end up with a poll of over 5 million phrases 😆

  11. CW: The FFS Project: Poll for native / fluent Finnish speakers about a rude phrase

I am trying to capture a phrase ("a", not "the") that would be recognised by Finnish speakers as an expression of angry frustration if shouted while someone listened to the morning news.

I realise you have many (many) (MANY) possibilities.

To narrow it down a bit I'd like to know what you personally ENJOY shouting across the room.

When the world has pissed you off, what is it SATISFYING to shout?

Extra choices offered below in alphabetical order (& I now know enough Finnish to know I have written some VERY rude words).

    Kiitos! (again)

I foolishly selected Finnish as language 6 because I'd had 2 very similar suggestions & it would therefore be quick. Obviously that has NOT turned out to be the case 😆

So, I commend you on your range & depth of swears & I am going to post an extended list in reply to this with a narrowed down requirement in the hope it helps.

Also, please remember it's just for a silly art project 😁

  25. CW: The FFS Project: Poll for native French speakers about a rude phrase (V2)

Apologies for this, but in the first hour that the above poll went out there has been a deluge of people saying that the most common one isn't included, so I'm doing another poll. Sorry.

Learning from this, for other languages I'm going to post the list first, to give time for any late entries 😁

If you voted in the last it would be great if you could vote again, please & thank you.

  27. CW: The FFS Project: Poll for native French speakers about a rude phrase

Dear French speakers (specifically in France, Quebecers - you're getting your own), in honour of the auld alliance I'm going to do the French entry to the project next.

Can you pick which of these you'd be most likely to use in the manner of an exasperated 'for fuck's sake'.

    Many thanks.

Edit: Sorry. There was debate. Please view thread for extra poll! Final response here was 55%, 44%, 1% (n=139)

  29. @eclectech @glynwolf This was so interesting to learn from @tanyakaroli (linguistics professor). I had never thought about the generational 'genres' of curses, nor about our skewed perceptions of how much subsequent generations curse. (As well as the art, #TheFFSProject is producing fascinating threads and curses and posts!)

  33. The initial thread last night confirms that while many languages have an equivalent phrase it doesn't tend to be a literal translation, & I think gathering the idiomatic translations is the right direction to go.

Happy to get some regional versions too, as that seems to be a thing.

There is a spreadsheet with 76 entries so far. Please bear with me. 😆

For languages where I end up with many options I'll go for a poll / discussion thread.

  35. The FFS Project Update Thread

ICYMI I'm making a bright & cheerful multilingual collection of the frustrated, angry, exasperated, slightly sweary expressions that are a constant companion to anyone paying attention in 2026, frequently as they check the news headlines.

Called the FFS project because in English "for fuck's sake" is a prime example of this, & because the whole thing was inspired by a request to make the Welsh version.

  37. @ccferrie @MiaMarkTwo @eclectech

'A dhiabhail' is great - I love the actual sound of that word. So soft for a hard curse. Am only now thinking of the similarity in Danish and Irish here. In Danish, invoking the devil is also a way of saying 'for fuck's sake'. 'For Satan' - the devil - a dhiabhail. 'For Satan' is a stronger curse in everyday Danish speech than just using 'fuck' in English (as people do too).

My sister-in-law who teaches German says that the idiomatic translation in German would most likely be "Ach, du Scheiße!" though there are a variety of idioms that would work depending on where in Germany you live.

It literally translates as "Oh you shit!"

  41. Oh dear lord, I feel a spreadsheet coming on 😆

Thank you all, lovely and occasionally foul-mouthed people.

My wee instance is grinding slightly as my notifications are filling up with, well, quite a lot of filth, basically.

I must head offline briefly but I will catch up with them all later, and there will enough for a good project here, without doubt.

I really should have planned a better intro post though.

  43. @MiaMarkTwo @eclectech That's fairly widespread, I think. In Irish, 'in ainm Dé' is literally 'in the name of God', but in context has the stronger sense of 'for fuck's sake'. Both when said in Irish and in English, given the tone.

  45. We are definitely on.

Have already seen that it's not going to be a translation as such, which is fine (and exactly why I wanted to ask Proper Human People).

It is definitely the sense and usage of FFS I'm after.

So... whatever you mutter under your breath when you see the news headlines in the morning, that's what works.

But if you can give me a literal translation too that would be ace - already a couple of interesting ones in the thread 😁

  49. OK, lets give this a shot. Basically with my linguistics skills I will be able to do ONE more. That would be quite a short series. To make it longer a fedi collaboration will be required 😁

If you fancy helping please let me know how to write "for fuck's sake" in your language (native, or one you're pretty fluent in - no literal translations from machines please).

Of course the big question is whether it's used elsewhere?

It *might* be a very short series 😆
