  1. BUT, keep in mind that simplifying a text for English Learners is NOT a best practice. It is much better to enhance or otherwise mark up the original reading to make it accessible to #EnglishLearners.

That said, simplifying has its uses --- like for quickly developing background knowledge or as an introduction before reading the original version.

  2. I created (with Claude code's help) a page to compare two texts --- to allow teachers to see exactly how a modified reading is different from the original. Many LLMs do not do a great job of modifying texts in the ways that teachers ask for. The "Reading Modification Analyzer" compares two texts and shows helpful data on how they differ.

    The analyzer is at: spackman-chris.neocities.org/t

As always, feedback and suggestions are most welcome.

  4. I think my #OhioTesolConference presentation went well today. About 60 or 70 attendees.

Some had trouble with the spreadsheet and script, but they can now at least create multilingual #Google Forms by hand. I also demo'ed 3 languages together in questions and using sections & jump logic for several languages in one Form.

No time to talk about collating data spread b/t several columns or files.

    Tomorrow: re-leveling and enhancing readings.

  9. Putting the finishing touches on my #OhioTesolConference presentations for tomorrow and Friday. Tomorrow is family engagement with #MultiLingual #GoogleForms during the B time slot.

Friday is re-leveling texts with #AI / #LLMs, but it went more to #VibeCoding to enhance texts. Sort of the reverse of re-leveling.

Re-leveling is lowering the complexity of the text.

Enhancing is adding supports so students can access the original text.

  14. Created a #vocabulary reference sheet for Algebra 2 students today. Mostly juniors (in USA #k12 #education parlance) in the classes. I made the sheet for my #EnglishLearners but happily gave it to other students who asked for it.

I use #TexLatex a lot, but usually not for so much math.

  15. Just got access to CYSC 620, which starts in about 10 days. Looks like a lot of fun.

Now I just need to finish prepping for *two* presentations at the #OhioTesol professional conference because I don't think I'll have time to work on them after next week. (What was I thinking?)

The compact, research-based guide is for teachers with intellectual agility, compassionate hearts, and creative minds – those who want to support the growth and contribution of multilingual learners in their classes.

Please share it with anyone who teaches!

  23. 2nd quarter started Monday. Should probably do some planning for #ESOL #Reading class.

Yesterday, the schools had our first International Dinner in 10+ years before our College and Career Access Night.

Both the dinner and the access night went very well, but it was a 13+ hour work day.

Today is blood drive and soccer practice.

Also need to finish prep for presenting at the #ITIP24 conference. Looking forward to the conference.

  24. Published my first script on GitHub!

Another educator and I used #ChatGPT and #GoogleGemini to create an #AppScript to translate #GoogleForms.

Translating forms is an important need for #k12 #education. Unfortunately, it is currently missing from #Google Forms. (Translation is only in #GoogleDocs at the moment.)

Paste the script in the script editor; save; run; give permission.

Script WILL overwrite original Form! Make a copy.

  29. Almost done with my video session for the #ITIP24 conference. Spent a few hours on it yesterday. It has been a while since I did any video recording or editing, but things went surprisingly smoothly.

Is there a way to point #kdenlive at my already installed whisper instance, though? Kdenlive wanted to install an entire new one.

  30. I'm due to teach an English social conversation class (A2/E2 level in CEFR) on Thursday. The school's provided basically just an outline, and the most recent resource I've got my hands on is from 1998.

Does anyone have recommendations for more recent English conversation textbooks (etc) with content suitable for this level? It's community teaching for refugees, not academic.

  31. All these fun classroom activities!! do tend to rely on the assumption that you have more than two students and more than one of them is willing to participate in anything outside their phone.

  32. I've just approved the *final* proofs!! This means that my book "Textbook English: A Multi-Dimensional Approach" should be out by the end of the month! #CorpusLinguistics 🥳

I'm particularly happy with the Online Supplements: elenlefoll.github.io/TextbookM (which include a cheeky link to an #OpenAccess version of the book's AAM 😉).

Do pre-order the book for your institutional libraries and get in touch if you'd like me to give a talk/workshop on the language of EFL textbooks! 🤓 #TEFL #TESOL

  33. Full day of #ProfessionalDevelopment today at the local education service center. Excellent PD on #teaching #EnglishLearners. Led by #EmilyFrancis.

Unfortunately, although many (most?) #k12 #teachers need to hear what she said, we had about 50.

Point is: teachers need more #TESOL / #ESOL / #ESL / #MLL training in school, and more follow up PD during the school year (not just optional PD after the year ends).

I would suggest, though, that the aircon does not need to be set to "arctic".

  34. I’m smitten with this book by Sheila Thorn who does a thorough takedown on “teaching listening” and really clarifies that what the vast majority of #TESOL Ts do is actually “Learning English through listening” rather than “Learning to listen in English”. She’s very careful not to completely dismiss all practices most #ELTs use in their classes for listening activities, but does clarify that most of what we’re doing isn’t doing what we think it’s doing. Fascinating and well-reasoned work here!
