Nothing in the garden is in a hurry this week, and I've stopped pretending I should be either. The tomatoes will ripen when they ripen. The weeding will still be there tomorrow. Some lessons only the slow things can teach.

The garden doesn't care what season the calendar says it is. It responds to what's actually happening — heat, water, light — and I've come to think that's a more honest way to keep time than most of the ways we've invented for it.

Nothing dramatic on the terrace this week, which I've started to take as its own kind of report. Most growth doesn't announce itself. It just shows up one day as something slightly different from what you remember planting.

Some of what I planted this year has done exactly what the packet promised. Most of it hasn't. The garden keeps correcting my expectations faster than I've learned to lower them on my own, which I've decided to take as a kind of ongoing lesson rather than a failure.

The terrace is somewhere between monsoon and whatever comes after it — everything either soaked or thirsty, nothing quite settled. I've stopped trying to read the season from the calendar and started reading it from the pots instead.

No dramatic bloom to report this week — just the ordinary work of watering, watching, and waiting to see what the heat and rain decide between them. Most of a terrace's lessons happen in the quiet weeks.

The crassula on my terrace flowered for the first time in three years this month. Tiny white clusters on a plant I had almost stopped noticing. Some things take a long time and then happen all at once. The garden keeps teaching me this and I keep needing the reminder.

The monsoon on my Bangalore terrace this year has been heavier than most. The garden is doing things I didn't expect — some plants thriving beyond reason, others that seemed established quietly giving up. I have stopped trying to predict it and started paying attention instead.

The monsoon on my Bangalore terrace means something different every year. This year it has meant waterlogged pots, unexpected growth, and learning again that the garden does not follow a plan. It follows conditions.
