Around 21:00 local [MET] Africa would fade in during summer. On June 23rd 1974 I had listened to Radio Togo for a while & inevitably landeded at Radio N'Djamena, Tchad. The best African ethno pop station with good signals in Mid-Europe during these years.

Shortwave radio was our Spotify, a pre-programmed Hyper-Wurlitzer in the sky, sound quality depending on the mercy of the ionosophere.

A night on the radio 50 years ago typically started at dusk with greyline dx-ing the far east. First Gamelan tunes, then All India Radio would fade in with strong signals on 31 meters.

At a time when the only ethno music record you could buy in the shops was Ravi Shankar with the Beatles we could listen to such Ragas every night.

This was my radio then, Barlow Wadley XCR 30, the best portable dx machine of the 1970ies. A triple superheterodyne with antenna tuner for the entire HF spectrum. Not only the broadcast bands but all of hf with 2 twists on 2 wheels .
Southafrican produce, endless troubles with customs & law because a full spectrum hf radio SSB radio for civilian use was new to them. And the radio importer being a kid of 17

And now the cable is in & I am hooked up to the Fire Peak in the Mountains of Hell with my fishbone. Aside from the vast OE Link FM network at least 7 other repeaters are in reach, 3 of these allegedly echolink capable. Well, let us see.

I am sitting exactly on the same spot in my mother's kitchen where I sat 50 years ago night after night with another radio. The holes in the door I had drilled for my longwires still there

Provisional set-up ready & tested. 10 QSOs done. And no this is not a Baofeng and who says "Quansheng" will be blocked! 😎

This a Wouxon, basically the same chinaware but better shielded against intermodulation & robust. This thingie has been with me for 12 years & every now & then I forget the process to bewitch it into programming mode. Just like now. Usb cable 1st? Wouxun on or off before starting chirp. As always forgot to ask ubuntu for lsusb

OE5XFK is hooked onto #Hamnet together with 13 other repeaters austriawide . The links are all via dishes on 2,4 or 5GHz. FM voice quality end-to-end is superb, relayed via a wireless TCP/IP network. Can't compare this to echolink. No internet involved.

The repeaters are all high up & most of these can be opened with rubber ducky set-ups

The mountain is called "Feuerkogel" and the massif around is the "Höllengebirge". Translated: OE5XFK is on top of the Fire Peak in the Mountains of Hell. Ctulhu slumbers down in depths of lake Traunsee below.

There are 2 dishes on top of this hotel for mountaineers & these should be ours. OE5XFK is not alone up there in hell, the repeater is linked to our network.

OE5XFK is located at ~ 1,550 meters
on a mountain I had frequently occupied when a kid. Hiking in autumn & downhill racing in winter.
Early on a way larger than expected rock rolled over my left foot during my geologic scouting phase there. Followed by unguided downill skiing

For obvious reasons this antenna is nicknamed "Fischgräte" = fishbone. Beyond the blocks the first row of the Alps. The fishbone, however points to the next row of mountains hidden in the mist. SSW from my provisional qth.
