  4. According to folklore, daffodils were originally white, and a favoured flower of Persephone. When Hades caught her, his touch turned the blooms yellow. It’s unsurprising that the daffodil is considered the flower of the underworld and they often appear on graves. In the Victorian language of flowers, daffodils meant 'regard'.

  6. This old gravestone gives us two fundamental types of symbol, the upper figure is a winged soul as a symbol of immortality while the lower representation of a skull and crossed bones is a symbol of mortality. Year unknown but could be 18th Century.

  7. The birlinn is a type of boat used especially in the Hebrides and West Highlands of Scotland in the Middle Ages. This one is carved on a gravestone at Kilbride church, Lerags, Argyll. At the top of the mast there looks to be a beacon or torch. A lit torch represents life, immortality and the everlasting life.

  9. This old gravestone has been covered with so many lichens that it's almost white. The shape of the stone gives a clue to age (I'm not going to hazard a guess) but it's no longer possible to read the inscription. Kilbride church, Lerags, Argyll.

  11. “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”. Agnus Dei carving on cross at Kilbrides church, Lerags. I think this lichen covered sheep looks very bonny.
