Finally time to stop using #SwiftKey on my iPhone as #Microsoft is now demanding I log in. To use a fucking keyboard on my phone… 🤬
-
I've been using #SwiftKey since before Microsoft bought them but it's been all sorts of glitch lately and it seems like a good opportunity to find an #opensource alternative that isn't a corporate key logger. Looking for something that can swipe to type.

Sweet jesus motherfuck. Why the fuck is my keyboard using more data than my browser, fedilab, and reddit app?
Evidently the cunts at MS enabled backups to my account–over data—as a fucking default.
I had "run in background" disabled, but it backs up in the foreground.
I genuinely liked Swiftkey (long before MS bought it). But it's getting deleted now.
Time to get used to HeliBoard.

I've been using #MicroSoft #Swiftkey for a few years. With the recent introduction of #copilot (optional at present) I decided look for another (#Android) #keyboard app.
Found #FUTO which claims to operate only locally on the device (that is no reporting back to #Google, #Apple, Microsoft or anyone else). It's an Alpha release version but seems stable and has some neat features.
Their web site info here: https://keyboard.futo.org/

About once a year, I question if #SwiftKey is still the best Android keyboard for me. Then I try a few alternatives, but always end up with SwiftKey again.
What keyboard are you using, and why do you recommend it? :blobcatthink:

@electricCZ #SwiftKey namísto Unihertzí #Kika klávesnice

@tante it's not only their search, imho other services like maps have declined in quality too and that process started already before the AI hype.
I don't care too much though, I've been avoiding Google search where possible for years...
Unrelated: Another great product that became a pile of shit with the rise of AI is #SwiftKey

Another #Apple or #Microsoft thing. Upgraded my #iPad to #iPadOS26 (and yeah, not a fan of liquid glass) but now the delete button on my #swiftkey keyboard doesn't work. Someone broke something somewhere!

Well, getting a new gadget can be fun, but at the moment, I am getting a wee bit frustrated, as I checked certain settings for about 10 times now, and they "should" be good and all, but somehow... It's not working as it should. So I was hoping that maybe the #FediHive mind could help out?
I have a Samsung tablet. I have a BT Samsung keyboard connected to it. With the old Samsung tablet, I had the settings that, if I were using the physical keyboard, the on-screen one would sod off, unless I tapped the screen and then it would come back on again. But I have all the settings as they should be, with the "hide virtual keyboard when using a physical keyboard". I checked the setting in both the Android software and in my SwiftKey software. And that used to work properly with my old tablet. But whatever I set it to now, the SwiftKey keyboard doesn't leave the screen when I am using the physical keyboard and it's driving me nuts. I just want it to leave when I don't need it... Ugh... it's so annoying and I don't know what to do to have the on-screen keyboard just leave when I am using the BT one, like the old tablet just did when you set it to do that... 🤔
So hopefully some smart Fedi folks will know where my error lies and then help me end the "little" frustration over this...
Ah well, I wrote an email to a sweet friend, I wrote my journal toot, and I walked with Bas. Now waiting for a parcel to arrive. And I will have to hassle a bit with the Fedilabs app to get all my beige accounts in it. That's the only downside of having a few accounts on the same instance, it's a bit harder to add them all to the Masto app... But I have done it before, so I can do it again. 😉
When the parcel has been delivered, estimated now between 11:24-12:24, I will walk with Bas again. And then, I have a plan... Relax on the couch and watch some telly. Maybe catch a snooze with little Bas...
Have a lovely day/time folks! And thanks in advance for any help. I will add the "needed" hashtags beneath the Toot for visibility.

Awesome! I found an Android keyboard that supports Chinese Jyutping (#Cantonese pinyin) on #fdroid called fcitx.
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.fcitx.fcitx5.android/
I think I can finally say goodbye to #Swiftkey! There's still no handwritten #Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) keyboard I found as an alternative, but the pinyin input will do for now. 😁

Sigh. Remember when #Swiftkey was good - before #microsoft ate it?
Type a single word, get multi word suggestions instead of the obvious.
Wrong first letter? Here are some nonsensical suggestions instead.Geriatric Ian? WTF?

For Android users, you might want to test the Futo keyboard. Its nice to set up and use, and is very privacy focused. Good keyboards are hard to find in Android (imo), and Im very keen to dump Swiftkey asap. You can download Futo from Fdroid too.
Update: after some comments recommending Heliboard, I'm also recommending that, I've just tested it. Really good.

@bodhipaksa oh, I was going to look and see if Swiftkey was still available! That's what I used to use years ago (on Android). I had assumed Google bought them when they added swiping, but now I see... I guess Microsoft bought them?
It is in the app store but ugh, it seems to now be loaded up with AI crap?

#TIL that if I can't enter a vowel with a macron (like ū) in SwiftKey using a long press on a key, one way to work around that is to add Māori as a language, since it uses them, and voila, it's an option now!
Just having Japanese enabled wasn't enough, even though romaji uses them to make long vowels
