As a Member of the European Parliament, I recently spoke about the need for action against men's violence against women and girls. Unfortunately, the Swedish government's lack of leadership on this issue was highlighted during a recent debate.
I asked the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, if his government would actively work to export Sweden's successful sex purchase laws and consent laws, as I and my colleague Frances Fitzgerald have proposed. However, the Prime Minister failed to provide a clear answer.
In a time of global challenges, it is unacceptable for any government to lack leadership on issues such as women's rights. The Swedish government's decision to abandon its feminist foreign policy and cut aid to those in need is not only shocking, but also harmful.
As a leader in the EU, it is important that Sweden prioritizes a safer and more equal Europe. However, by staying silent on the regimes in Iran and Turkey, the Swedish government is failing to live up to this responsibility.
I urge the Prime Minister and the Swedish government to take action on these issues and work towards creating a better future for all. #WomenRightsAreHumanRights #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #SwedenMustDoMore #LeadershipInAction
Proposals:
1. The Swedish government should actively work to export Sweden's successful sex purchase laws and consent laws to other countries.
2. The Swedish government should prioritize women's rights and take a stronger stance against regimes that violate these rights, such as Iran and Turkey.
3. The Swedish government should increase its aid to those in need, rather than cutting it.
4. The EU should prioritize women's rights and take a stronger stance against violence against women and girls.
